I am on JA and have been offered 2 x 12 hour shifts @ 12.60 an hour. Which is the best way to go about this. Some people mentioned X and Os but with a over a 50k round trip and parking I feel it makes no monetary sense take up this work. I really want to get back to work but at 57 time is running out.

At present I get 188 plus child 29 and wife( works part time) 50 = 267
    Or
Working 302 assessed income works out at 157 taken from my JA leaves me 31e
    31+29+50+302=412 plus wife earnings 80e =492

If my wife and I claim full benefits by not working we get 342 so both of us working part time we are better off by 150e we have not even factored child minding costs when needed and of course parking and fuel for car. Am I missing some thing please I would appreciate help. I really want to take up this work but I feel it will cost to do so.

Go into your local labour exchange and get them to go over the figures with you. Then make a decision based on the full facts. Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply Maryanne84 and advice. But I would be scared to tell them I have been offered part time work and I am not going to take it due to the above details.

Thank you both for your help. But some times they are not that helpful and are out to save money. I am just scared they will say take up the work no matter what. I am very grateful of DS as I went back to college and did a QQI 5 course and am now qualified hence the part time work offer. But honestly I can not afford to lose money as we are just getting by on what we have. Thanks again for advice. I feel the whole system is not designed for people to make the effort and reward people to work. Sorry for ranting on a Sunday.

Do you qualify as a long-term Jobseeker? If so, the Part-Time Job Incentive Scheme might help: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/social_welfare_payments_and_work/part_time_job_incentive_scheme.html

Thank you very much thats what I was looking for. I do qualify as long term as I was on JA and went on a 12 month course with the ETB. I have only just signed back on and as I said I was offered this work on completion of my course. Part of my course was working 380 hours work experience so I feel I deserve some paid work after that. Thanks for your kind help.

You're very welcome. As you'd be working 24 hours per week, double check with your local office as regards "if you get part-time work for less than 24 hours per week". I doubt it'd be a problem though. Best of luck! :)
