Tonight has been especially bad with lots of fog and smog especially in small towns and built up areas .If you in a smokeless zone it shud be ok

Perhaps it's leaking in to the attic of your parents house?

I would guess its because the chimney is further back from original house and is lower.

Shouldn't that chimney stack be higher? It looks to be at a similar level to your window. I would have assumed it would have to be at roof level?

I just looked again. Sure it's slightly lower than their own window! That's bonkers.

ISTR that there was a requirement that the chimney be 7 metres high, that one looks to be less that that, at least it should be higher than the ridge of the main house..

1m above the roof is compliant for building regulations. There's also minimum distances from windows and adjoining windows but this looks to be well into compliance.

My opinion is that it's just the wind pattern for the area and not a lot can be done without significant work/cost to your neighbours property.
