Ok, following up on smart this smart that,

Is there a good affordable system that you can set curtains to open and close at certain times and overwrite them via app?

There's a few offerings on the market for remote control curtains/roller/venetian/roman blinds but for the most part there's no smart home integration unless you look at the really high-end (expensive) products.

It's worth looking at some of the cheaper remote control products and a WiFi to 433MHz bridge to App/Smart enable them.

I have purchased one of these:

Yet to install it. It uses Infrared so will trigger via Harmony remote initially but might look later to trigger via my home automation software by adding a Z-Wave device to control open/close.

What I'd love is a roller for the fabric blinds I have. That's one daily routine I could do without.

That's the lowest cost of all the motorised options. I'll let you know in a couple of weeks if I can recommend a vendor.

Much appreciated. I have a feeling that cheap in this area could mean noise though! Although in fairness, you didn't say cheap, you said lowest cost :) There can be a big difference!

    There's this.
    http://www.teptron.com/mobile/start_m.html

There doesn't seem to be any good price ones out there. Realistically it just needs a service motor with some sort of limit switch . Maybe even a marking the cord when opened and closed and then looking for a Color change Would do

    For blind https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jalousier/flipflic

    Here you go.

    http://thedigitallifestyle.com/w/index.php/2014/10/28/budget-z-wave-curtain-tracks-with-vera-dooya-fibaro-part1/

Zwave relay and electric curtain rail from China. Add in a Amazon Echo with and your done. Also there is MOVEZ which is a Zwave version of the Move, I have a home server running Domocitz with a Aeon ZWave stick and have ordered ten movez for a new house move in the new year. Will also rewire for Electric curtains and Zwave at all switches. Going LightwaveRF for sockets and will put an Echo in each room.

Have you tried a MOVE? Makes no comment on how much weight they can pull. Also I'd be concerned about battery life and heavy curtains

    Here's another one. http://www.wazombi.com/shades.html

Once again no comment on weight or limit switches

The Movez is for blinds, they curtains are per the first link above which is a separate system.

Was very tempted until I spotted the Bluetooth control. Kickstarter project suggests Z-wave, website Bluetooth! Anyone using these?

Added: looks like the z-wave ones are being funded by the kickstarter campaign and are planned for delivery around March '17.

This guys blog goes into detail about a DIY of motorising curtains and blinds. It does not look difficult or prohibitively expensive.
