    Hi everyone,

Mum and dad are currently on Three mobile broadband. Up until May/June things were fine and all of a sudden just went rapidly downhill. This timeline apparently connects with a move Three made over to O2's masts.

Most of the time they can't get anything so cancelling is the only realistic option. Going to test Vodafone if we can before committing.

What are your experiences of the likes of Q-Sat? Are they worth the extra? Current cost is €25 p.m. for pretty much nothing at the moment. With Q-Sat, a 12 month contract is working out at €35 p.m. plus installation costs. Download cap of 8GB applies but this is fine as they only really use it for light browsing (not streaming, gaming etc).

    Thanks
    ccl

Any options in the area such as Imagine LTE? or other wireless operator. Is the home on a planned rural FTTH line?http://fibrerollout.ie/where-and-when/

Satellite is just plain awful. Light browsing could still mean watching Facebook/Twitter and playing embedded videos. 8GB could get eaten within a month even with regular social media activity, surfing, sending emails etc.

Stay totally away from satellite, it's a worse solution than Mobile broadband.

Check this map, drop the marker on their house and tick Wireless ISPs, This will show you what Fixed Wireless Access operators might cover their house. Reply with the list of any that cover there and we might have opinions. Any one that's good, give em a call and see if they can actually hit the house with a signal.

If checking other mobile operators check both Vodafone and Meteor (they're the only other 2 networks in the country).

    Seriously satellite isn't the solution.

Have you tried enabling roamimg and manually browsing for networks from the dongle admin web interface?

My signal went to pot recently but this fixed it for me

Hi all, thanks a million for the comments. I really don't want to go down the route of satellite largely because of the cost (€200 for a dish!) but also because the reviews are just so mixed. The bad ones are baaaad and there are too many of them for my liking, no matter which provider I'm looking at.

Long_b, roaming is enabled but not sure if manual browsing is so I'll try that tonight. Thanks!

ItHurtsWhenIP, thanks, will check that. The only alternative I think is Vodafone, and they offer a two-week trial period so it's an option. Want to get this sorted out before Chrimbo if I can, siblings are away this year so want to hook the folks up on Skype or Whatsapp or something.

Forgot to say that phoneline not an option as the exchange upgrade done a few years ago only went out a few miles from the town, not far enough out for us and no plans for Eir to continue the upgrade.
