Clutch Slipping On MF 4225

    Was driving home today uphill carrying a 3 ton trailer with about half a ton on timber etc in it, tractor began to slow down and had to change from 4th to 2nd to get up the hill. Up until recently it would have sailed up the hill no bother. The clutch has a very high biting point for the last 18 months, you know yourself, putting things on the long finger, apparently you need a special tool to adjust clutch, father sayin we might get someone out to do it etc.

    Question is, does the clutch slipping mean it needs a new one or could it just need adjustment? 17 years old with 3800 hours

    You need a long tool with a crank on it to adjust it alright.. i.d always say to try adjusting 1st anyways! A lot cheaper than splitting it.. also if you check the inspection point underneath you will be able to see wear on fingers, etc..

    You could butcher a spanner to make the tool either!

    Had that with 4255 last yr. Would struggle to drive up hill on its own towards the end. New clutch!!

    How much is a new clutch ,labour the whole lot these days? A grand do it?

    I don't think any of the clutches with master/slave cylinders can be adjusted, they self adjust in essence.

    Clutch in our 885xl went in the spring. We split it, new clutch, pressure plate and rebuild kit for slave cylinder, done and running again for €390/400.

    I'd say you'll need a clutch.

    Literally an inspection hole under the clutch.. i will take a picture of the tool if i think of it when i have time over the weekend.

    Thank you larthehar. If people are saying it's a self-adjusting clutch why would there be an adjustment tool?

    This is a cable moving a lever not a hydraulic job. As the clutch wears the pedal rises. Is there any free play at the top? Is the pedal roughly the same height off the floor as the brake pedals?

    Had a look today and couldn't see an inspection hole. Nearest I could find was a plate held on by three bolts but that is way to far back. Yes there is lots of free play at the top of the clutch. I didn't look at the brake pedals, will do that tomorrow
