NCT - Failed on Emissions

    Hi everyone.

I'm looking for some advice, my 03 1.4 petrol Golf failed on emissions, quite badly by the looks of it.

See the results in the picture, the top result is low idle and bottom result is high idle.

Some background, the car is due a service, just gone past 10,000 miles since last service and is burning some oil.

Will a service and dipthane help get the emissions to pass or is there more at fault?

    Thanks.

When did your car last see the inside of a mechanics garage ?

Timing belt was done in July, full-service was done in April.

Unlikely the service will make much difference. Had a 1.6 petrol Toledo fail before for similar, turned out three was a damaged hose drawing in air and leading to incorrect readings.

Something as simple as a leaking exhaust can cause an emission fail . Not surprised its a VW either .

Many garages have their own tester nowadays .

You could change cat and lambda and use dipethane , and get garage to check exhaust for leaks .

Also make sure your oil is new and correct one for engine .

Your lambda is fine. Could be the cat , however keep in mind that these engines are infamous for drinking oil which would increase your hc.

My suggestion would be before going replacing expensive parts check for simpler things.as said already these cars are oilaholcs but something could be adding to this like a plugged up ccv,to thin an oil being used etc.you could also have a leaking intake hose after the maf sensor.i normally find that the more the emissions are out the easier it is to diagnose.i take it you don't have any engine management lights on?

If you put a spurious cat on it just to get an NCT I would recommend shifting it on ASAP, I suspect you would be masking the problem rather than fixing it. You'd think they could have made an engine so woefully underpowered reliable/longlived as a tradeoff!

    No engine management lights on.

I'll go to a garage and see if there's an easy (relatively cheap) fix, if not I'll look at getting a newer car.
