Switching Sky to Eir - broadband speed should stay constant?

    Hi,
I'm considering switching from Sky to Eir for Broadband, TV and Phone and have a question on broadband speeds.

Both advertise up to 100mb download speed and I'm fairly happy with the speeds I get currently with Sky but, if I do switch, should Eir be able to give the same speeds or very close?

Since it's the same line coming into the house then I presume speeds shouldn't
vary too much or am I being completely naive?

    Thanks,
    Bobjim

Assuming you arent opting for Eir TV, yes.

Why is that? As I said, I'm thinking of taking the Broadband/TV/Phone bundle so this is relevant.

Hmm, investigated a bit more and saw that Eir supply TV channels over IP i.e. no dish. So presumably receiving TV channels over broadband could affect speeds on other devices?

TV over ip cuts out a few megs.

If you can get 80Mbps 20 or 30 is provisioned for tv so your download speed is more like 60.

Oooops, skimming on my mobile :P

    Example:
    Real value: 52Mb
    Normal Rating 50Mb
    TV Rating: 40Mb
    TV Rating + 2 HD streams: 28Mb

So depending on your own location/proximity to the cab and number of set top boxes you use the speed can be almost halved.

More importantly: Eir TV is shíte. Objectively shíte. Their Netgem set top boxes are not a patch on Virgin/UPC hardware which again is substandard compared to Skys boxes. I'm no fan of Sky's business practices but their TV hardware is so much better.
