Celtic Tiger is definitely back when you can't get someone to do a paying job

Apologies for the rant in advance but can someone please explain to me why tradesmen don't want to do a job that pays?

I can understand some may be quite busy but why then say you'll be out and not turn up and not answer the phone. Simply say you're too busy.

I'm having this problem in Cork and Dublin and so frustrated with it.

It's not like I want something done for nothing. Just want jobs done.

There was a similar post in plumbing last week. I'll give the same answer as I gave last week. This is a very busy time of year. Most if not all of the good decorators will be booked up till Christmas. If you wait till January you'll have no problem s

There's a little over 4 weeks to Christmas. Harvey Normans can't guarantee delivery of some future this side of Christmas. If you are lucky enough to be able to buy a new car for January 2nd ordering it now won't guarantee delivery on time. Bottom line is the next 4 weeks can be the busiest 4 weeks of the year

What's the job? Some jobs pay more than others, others can be done when there's a lull.

Why do some people wait until the last few weeks before Christmas to get things fixed that have been broken for most of the year?
The amount of calls I get from people hoping to get boilers or heating systems that are acting up fixed in the next week or so, only to find out that the problem has been occuring for weeks if not months, and in one case, years!
Priority now is trying to keep heating systems working, especially for elderly people and homes with young children / babies.

It's not decorating I'm looking to get done, it's heating that I need working which is quite important.

I see where you're coming from but in my case there was steam pissing out of my boiler so I've had to turn the power off to it altogether. I'm not elderly quite yet but jesus I still feel the cold.

It's repairs to heating systems. I understand it's a busy time of the year but tradesmen have to remember the people who support them all through the year and during a recession. One guy I'm calling I've given numerous jobs to this year and he's not even answering his phone.

I hear ya. Have been messed around by four different guys for roof work - 'I'll take a look at it next week but won't be able to start for a fortnight'. Still no one coming out to it. Am just glad it's dry weather.

I should wear my glasses. I swear I read painting. I was wondering why it was posted in the plumbing :)

There is no excuse for this. We are all busy and can't take on some jobs but making appointments & simply not turning up is down right wrong.

    They're a different breed.

I used to work as a receptionist where wealthy tradesmen would swan in like Pat Mustard just off the milk round and say "do you not know who I am?" when I ask them who should I say is here...

Did they ever ask could they put their massive tool in your box?
    I'll get my coat...

So, update. Sat in last night (in freezing cold house!) waiting for repair man to arrive and he never turned up, answered his phone or rang me back.

LL text me today to ask did he turn up, I said no and he said "fecker, I'll get on to him now but he said you could use it in the meantime no problem".

While there's steam piss out of the top of the boiler? I don't think so!! Am I the one who's mad here?

would you not get an electric rad so that you can heat the room you are using, at least as an emergency measure?

I have one oil filled plug in one for the bedroom so at least that's warm but even going to the toilet is an ordeal. I know where you're coming from but they're not cheap heaters and eat electricity.

you are right, but as an emergency measure, they are a lot better than being freezing cold... Id just take it around with you i.e. when using living room, then put it in bedroom half hour before bedtime to heat up room...

The one I have takes 4 hours to heat bedroom. :D:D I think the heat has gotten into the walls of the house now. It's not very well insulated. It can feel colder inside the house than out on the street.

One of the lads here said he saw a heater in Aldi or Lidl for 50 euro kind of like one of them industrial blowers. That might be a solution to just get hot air running through the house for a few hours at least. Still another 50 euro I've to shell out plus the extra electricity.
