To leave job to go on SNA sub list

Looking for some advice on weather to leave my job or not to go on a subbing list in a school for a special needs assistant.

I have been working in my current job for 12 years now and have been deeply unhappy in it recently. I did a special needs assistant course last year so i have my qualifications and have applied for many jobs but only had 2 interviews. I have heard that it is extremely hard to get a job as an SNA if you are not currently subbing as the school would be talking a chance in hiring you as they wouldnt know you well ( which is totally understandable). It would be so much easier if i was unemployed in the first place as i would be able to volunteer or sub in a school and get my name known. Has anyone taken this risk in the hope they would get another job??

I was talking to a principal recently who said that the garda clearence procedure has changed and it now means that SNAs need garda clearence for EACH school they are working in, this i imagine would make it very hard to get sub work unless you have clearence for a load of schools.

Bit is it not up to the school to send off the garda clearance? Do you not just go to the schools and say your available for subbing and they send off the form for you?

I don't know, however i believe clearence is taking is taking at least 8 weeks at the moment and you can't work until you have clearence.

Garda vetting is only taking a couple of weeks now. Why can you not go on the sub list whilst you are working? It seems mad to give up work in the hope of getting a few days subbing.
Have you much volunteer experience, if not I think you should concentrate on that to enhance your CV and improve your chances of landing a job.

    Hi jenny81,
I know it's been a couple of years since you first posted but I'm wondering how you are getting on. I'm in the same position as you were....looking to get work as a special needs assistant but working part time(preschool) and wondering if I should leave my job so I am available for more days subbing or just try to get experience subbing or volunteer on a Monday when I don't work.
Did you take the leap and if do how did it work out ..
