Hummingbird Ireland?

A few years ago I spotted what I reckon was a hummingbird hovering and feeding on wall flower outside my home, it was hovering over the plant then moving away at speed to return again very quickly. I turned to get a camera and when looked back it was gone and didn't come back.

Just wondering if there has ever been any reports of a hummingbird in Ireland before, this creature was about 2 inches long and I was about 15mtrs away at the time. I know what a hummingbird hawk moth looks like as have those around my home from time to time but this was different.

Any idea what it could have been or is it even possible one of these was loose in Ireland.

Extremely unlikely it was a Humming bird. I'm inclined to go for Humming bird hawk moth. I know you say not but it's the only likely answer.

I believe there are some down at the Dodder, they've been photographed and filmed iirc.

Initially I would say hawkmoth as well, but I know what these are like and have photographed them in the past and im very sure it was different and a little bigger. Is there anything else the resembles them some sort of bigger moth or something ?

I think its possible if one escaped from somewhere but Ireland it to cold for them to live or breed. I remember a friend once telling me about finding a small scorpion when working at dublin airport which may have come in on airfreight.

many types of Hawk-moth most of them bigger than a Hummingbird HM. Most are nocturnal but can be a bout during the day. There is also a resident Bee hawk-moth which is day flying

The Convolvulus Hawk Moth has a wing span of up to 120mm and can occasionally been seen hovering at flowers during daylight. It is a rare visitor to Ireland but becoming more common. Big enough to be mistaken for a hummingbird?
