    Hi there,

We recently moved into a house. I was looking to get Virgin Media installed.
When I check the availability we're the only house in the whole estate who are unavailable. I contacted Virgin and they said it's because they did not gain access to the property to install service lines and there's nothing they can do.

The only other option is another company who offer a 24mb connection but it's alot more expensive than virgin.

Anyone else ever encounter this problem?

If their cable runs along the road they could presumably now connect you, but this would involve significant extra cost which you might not be willing to pay.

The previous tenant told them to f'ck off when they ran the drops. Now you're excluded. We spent years waiting because next door blocked them like that.

Installs are free but if they're snubbed when they offer its very hard to get them back. All you can do is pester their sales team.

BTW, if you can up to 24Mb it should be offered by all the ADSL providers (Eir, Magnet, Vodafone, Sky, Pure..)

That's a balls! we're literally the only house in the estate. Yeah but can't be arsed entering into 18 month contracts etc. Virgin has the most amicable deals for our requirements.

Did your perstering of the sales team eventually rectify the situation?

It was about 4yrs after the first time they tried that I'm aware of that they came back and the neighbour agreed that time.

We called a few times but never really pushed it.

Time to up the harassment of the sales team I suppose

When we moved into our house the services had been disconnected but the line was there because it was installed when they built the houses. When we applied for an internet service we were told that our house couldn't be connected. Just like you we were the only house in the estate that couldn't be connected. We wrote to the eircom area manager and the problem was sorted out immediately. Turns out a previous owner had not paid a bill and we got our internet connected without further delay. A very nice man handled the complaint. Failing that you could contact comreg and make a complaint. Hope this helps.

Got new broadband box today , house wired but the cable is not long enough when exiting the wall to connect the splitter . Looks like a previous tenant may have shortened it at some stage . Will virgin come back and replace / extend the cable ??

There should be a socket on the wall. Is there?

For BB they are quite stable and speeds are decent. I found them to be responsive if there is a problem.

On the other hand, their upload speeds are poor in comparison to download speeds (about 10%), and they tend to have creeping price increases each year.

There is a socket but it only contains a bare wire when you take off the protective box , the wire is too short to attatch to modem connection lead/wire.
    Hope that makes sense!!!

There's usually what looks like a splitter in there. If it's just a bare wire then you need an installer to fit a new outlet box.

Last year my annual bill was due to be paid on the 5th of January. (I only received it a few days previously). I pay a year in advance.

Looking at the bill and it was wrong so I queried it. It took two weeks to sort out the mess. Several phone calls including a few overseas. Chat etc.

I paid the amended amount on the 15th January. I confirmed with them in April that everything was now up to date.

I got my bill for next year last Thursday. It has to be paid by next Wednesday. I noticed that I was charged a Late Payment Fee of €12.50. Presumably for the two weeks it took to sort out their mistake last year.

Has anyone else ever been charged a Late Payment Fee?

If I am paying a year in advance they have my money up front for the year. How can I be charged a late payment?

Should I not be given more than a few days notice to pay/inspect my bill, especially if I have a query?

You're most likely on analogue TV only if it's an annual bill. That's a very rare scenario nowadays.
Late payment fees are normal, but to be fair they would credit you back if it was pointed out to be their mistake.

The way VMI operate by the time you receive the bill the DD mandate has already been issued.

    Its rather shady.

In that posters case though, the bill would have been sent on 24th December.

I may be wrong but I'm assuming the poster is paying cash in the post office etc. and getting paper bills.

I would make a payment of the amount due, with late payment charge omitted, and immediately request a credit for the late payment charge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,169 ✭✭✭Living Off The Splash

Yes. It's analogue T.V and it's a paper bill. There is a built in Giro on the bottom of the form already completed by Virgin Media. It is due tomorrow.

I will pay it today but it probably won't reach their bank account until the day after tomorrow.

If Virgin Media have this option of paying my bill they are only giving me a window of a couple of days to make the payment. This is very unfair. It is like they are setting me up for a Late Payment Fee for next year's bill.

If I don't pay last year's Late Payment fee I will start getting arrears notices, (even though I am paying a year in advance) and I will eventually be given a credit for the €12.50 and possibly another apology to add to the previous apologies.

The problem is that next year their system will automatically issue another late Payment fee.

And on and on and on....

Check your "correct" address on eircode, they already ****ed me.. if you want an advice, go for another ISP. (unexperimented technician, bad service care, worst connection I never had)

Yes same here, I tried to call them so many times, the guy on the phone said that they will send somebody, 3 months later no answer.
