White substance on ballcock

    Hi,

    Got into the attic to take a look at the tank in the attic. Apart from needing a jacket I noticed some white crystalline stuff on the ballcock and around the edges of the tank at the water level.
    Anyone any ideas what this is?

    Limescale. Seen in areas of hard water. Nothing to worry about.

    Just have a check to see if there is any water coming out the vent pipe when running.

    The vent pipe being the one above the ballcock? And when the heating is running I take it?

    Yes. If you have solid fuel, also check it when that's up to full temp.

    Threw my eye on it anyway at full heat and nothing from the vent at all. Is the vent a safety release for back boilers?
    Hence you getting me to check in case the water was being overheated?

    It's a safety for any open heating system and if water comes out of it it highlights some circulation problem. Poorly installed boiler stoves often cause "pumping over", but can happen on any heating system.

    I poked my fingers as far as i could up it to see if it was wet or warm and it was dry.

    Don't take that last sentence in isolation.
