So we are having our Christmas party in two weeks. It is in a hotel with a meal. What would normally be worn in these cases as a male. In my old workplaces it was more casual as the venue was just a pub with a closed off section and I would have just worn jeans and a shirt but a meal at a hotel seems more formal?

Very often a suit or at least a jacket: (for the earlier part of the evening anyway.)

Maybe a more glamorous, funny or colourful tie than daytime.

And a nice ironed shirt, but sometimes no tie -- or the tie is removed quite early on.

I'd go with something like a nice pair of fitted jeans, a white shirt (you could leave off the tie) and then a light-coloured suit jacket/blazer.
From experience, I think it's better to end up slightly over-dressed than under-dressed.

Would you not just ask your work mates who've been to the previous xmas parties so you know what the norm will be? Different companies may have different dynamics - eg a stuffy old school bank may frown upon jeans but a techie upstart firm may laugh if you wear a tie.

Our xmas parties during the celtic tiger were grand black tie affairs but they got rid of them when the economy went belly up. Our more recent ones would have been meals with drinks and dancing but everyone just dressed smart casual - similar to what you might wear going to a nightclub.

Dress like Obama, you can't go wrong. Always stylish whether casual or suity.

Go with something like slim fitting jeans, nice brown pair of shoea, something you'd wear with a suit. A white shirt and a v or crew neck jumper over.
It does depend how formal the event is but imo a suit would be over kill.
I've never been a fan of suit jackets/blazers and jeans.
