Connecting Virgin box to LG TV

I have recently bought an LG HD TV and unfortunately my UPC/Virgin box is an old type - it doesn't have a HDMI socket, just scart. I have contacted Virgin and I am getting a HD one next week but in the meantime is it possible to connect it to my tv with say a scart to phono cable? I have tried it and it doesn't seem to be connecting, saying no signal.

    Any ideas anyone ??

    Thanks.

You can buy converters which will take SCART or (component and audio) and give you a HDMI signal but if the new box is arriving next week, it's not worth pursuing that option. Don't even consider anything that call itself an 'adapter', this cannot be done with wires alone, you need an intelligent device which does the analog to digital conversion.

    Thanks for the reply.

Nah I won't be buying any adaptors or converters as it's pointless as I will have the new box by next week. I even priced a scart to HDMI in Power City today and was quoted €45. Crazy price.

From reading articles/posts online I read that the scart to phono cable would work but it is not connecting for some reason. Just wanted to be able have access to the box until new one arrives. Ah well...

This is exactly why companies should automatically offer upgrades in equipment to existing customers.

+1 Accessories and (especially) cables are terrible value in electrical stores.

Your new TV might take a composite signal - a video signal via a single (usually yellow) phono socket. If you tell the old UPC box to output a composite (instead of RGB) video signal, the connection may work using a SCART to phono harness. That yellow video socket on the TV is normally intended for connecting a digital camera, the video quality won't be great but it might tide you over until the new box arrives.

Damn I never thought of changing the output on the UPC box itself !!! The tv does seem to take composite and av signals as they do appear in the input list. I'll try it in the morning and see how it goes, sure it can do no harm :)

    Thanks !
