Hi just wondering if anyone is experiencing any hassle from any vrt office around the country about the new crewcab regulations. I purchased
a pajero Shogun jeep in the UK and imported it into Ireland and I got a test 48 on it straight away on the second last week in October and I booked in my appointment with the vrt office and I was given a date in the first week in November as this was the earliest they could see me and I asked them had they any appointment any where before that in ireland and I would travel but again I was told no as the earliest available was early November ,so I had to settle for that.I tried to get an earlier appointment or a cancellation after this but was unsuccessful. I brought my jeep along with all the correct paperwork on the day of the appointment to the vrt office, and was told that they could not proceed with my application until I got it measured by the nsai , by laser.I informed them that that regulation did not come into effect until November 1 st but they would not listen.I would have thought that when I had a test 48 done on my jeep by a approved centre and had all the correct paperwork before November 1 st and they could not give me an appointment until after November 1 st that I would not fall under these new regulations. I now hear that the pajero shogun has been taken off the approved list since November.I went onto the vrt website after this and rang every approved test centre on their website and was told that the same thing by all of them which was ,they do not have this new way of measuring vehicles and the only ones which could do this was the nsai .Any help would be appreciated as I need this vehicle for my work.

How did this situation work out for you? considering the pajero is sold as a 5 seater commercial with no obvious differences to converting a 7 seater pajero to a 5 seater.

There is no difference except the new one is factory certified and the 2nd hand one isn't. It's a total joke but that's the way it is.

Thats why theres a load of 2 seat range rover commercials on donedeal for knockdown money at the moment (2011 one for 20k) a bunch of lads got stung by the rapid rollout of this and now just want rid of their 2 seat commercials.

Would they not have been as well off just sending them back to the UK when they couldn't get them in as 5 seat commercials?

Thats it, There were even some shady convertors saying to people to do a 2 seat conversion , vrt then wait 6 months and then get the logbook changed to 5 seat and install, revenue ofcourse were already wise and the convertors just said 'tough shít' when the extra 3 seat change was denied

There's surely no way a RRS could have met the criteria in the first place?

Be interesting to see how many people convert to 2 seat and then put the seats back in (and just leave it as 2 seat on log book).

This was often done years ago (I remember plenty of people with landcrusier "2 seat commercials" with rear seats and even one or two with golf vans with rear seats) but it was very easy to catch people out as there was no such thing as 5 seat commercials so you were fecked the minute you went though a check point with people in the back. However now 5 seat commercials are so common it wouldn't raise any suspicion at a checkpoint.

Reminds me of a Danish mate of mine when I lived in Germany in the 80's. He and a German friend disappeared for a few months and came back loaded. Turns out they were buying up used Porsche 944's in Northern Germany, converting them to "commercial vehicles" by removing the rear seats and some other minor mods, importing them into Denmark as such to avoid the punitive car registration tax (if you think VRT is bad, you ain't seen nothing!) shipping the seats over the border to Denmark separately and then converting them back to normal spec and selling them on in Denmark.

There was some loophole in the regulations at the time that meant that very few cars could be converted in this way, but the 944 was one of them. They closed the loophole very quickly and that was the end of that little scam!

Hah, similar story, apparantly the car that rocked the boat too far was a converted bentley bentayga , thats when revenue pulled the plug

The real scam is the legal one that is allowing countries charge crazy "registration" taxes which are just disguised import duties going totally against the spirit of free movement of goods and services within the EU.

I saw fair play to anyone who has a way around or to beat these systems.

Another one :D VRT is not against any rules, as long as it is applied universally to imports and domestic goods.

It's not against the rules but that doesn't make it fair.

Why should a car cost so much more here than in the UK?

Because we are still cheaper than other countries.

The UK has a car manufacturing industry that needs support. We have a bloated civil service and extremely generous welfare system that needs support

Won't work now, a Pajero that was converted under the old system but the paperwork wasn't processed before the changover was refused a CVRT recently because the number of seats didn't match what the on line system said it had. Only way to get it through was to take the back row out again.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Does anyone know how much VRT apples to a 1 year old Transit Custom LWB Double Cab in Van?

It's a factory built 6 seat crew cab van with a fixed bulkhead and a paneled loadbay in the rear, so it's surely the flat rate €200?

Some sites online seem to suggest the because of the 6 seats it's the 13.3% VRT.

    Does anyone know for sure?

I'm pretty sure that all crew Cabs now attract 13.3% VRT.

Used to be if the GVW was 3450-3500 kg then it got 200 VRT but that changed a few years ago, and I don't think they do a Custom 350.

    Thanks. That's annoying.

Is it possible to ring someone in revenue to get a definitive answer before buying?

If it is 13.3% VRT can they give me a ball-park figure of OMSP over the phone too?

Would love to hear of any experiences of someone that had actually got this NSAI laser measurement done and the report he was supplied with.
