    Hi All,

The missus is looking to upgrade her bullet proof ’99 Renault Scenic. Looking for car with a bit of height under 1500cc. Does very little mileage – approx 5000KM per year between NCT’s. All stop/start driving – dropping kits to & from school/sports/shops etc.. Don’t have a very large budget. I know we absolutely don’t need a diesel but a family member has offered his very clean Nissan Qashqai 1.5 DCi at a very low price. As she doesn’t do mileage to justify a diesel, are we just looking for trouble by taking this on. Will we (I) have DPF & DMF issues within a few months. Any advice appreciated.

    1) it will be very hard to find anything from 2008 onwards in petrol

    2) you'll probably Have to go to the UK for a petrol, but even there you will have limited options.

    3) Ford galaxy / avensus verso ?

    4) if you Have the time, take the quahqai for a very spirited drive in a low gear on a motorway every second weekend.

    5) see number 4

If your getting a better deal on the diesel go for the diesel.
Just give it a good run every so often.

Maybe use it as your main car occasionally and put up more miles

Do you need a bigger car than the scenic?

If you have to go out of your way to use a particular type of car properly then surely you're buying the wrong type of car? The diesel Qashqai is only a good deal if you actually have proper use for it. Plenty of petrol Qashqai's about for sale.

Thanks for all the replies. While this is a good idea for the diesel, I don't think the spirited drive would happen in reality. Maybe for the first few weekends but probably not after that.

Think I might keep an eye out for a petrol model

    Thanks,

Petrol Clio or any 1.2 litre petrol is really all you will get in petrol. Same issue myself so looking to buy the right petrol car new and hold onto it.

There's plenty of petrol corollas from 07 onwards out there

Is there a sudden shortage of petrol cars in Ireland then ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,599 ✭✭✭Fiskar

Not sudden, there are plenty of petrol cars but below 1.4 litre, most mainstream cars and SUVs are diesel

Beepbeep.ie is a website run by SIMI. It gives registration statistics from the last 10 or so years, it will tell you at a glance what proportion of petrol vs diesel were registered for a particular model.

    Cheers for that.

VW Polo 266 for sale, 188 petrol

VW Golf 716 for sale , just 76 petrol

The bigger the car the more likely it will be diesel

you need to go to the stats section to see how many were sold new,

If you need a MPV you will probably have to go diesel. The older petrol models are crazy on car tax and put me off.

People go on holidays and don't drive their diesel cars for 2/3 weeks and don't have issues. Just give it a good blow out every so often.

Leaving a car 2-3 weeks means what exactly ?

How about a Toyota verso from 2008-2009. Not exciting but most are 1.6 petrol, reliable and have 7 seats. Get one for 4 or 5k

Good idea. 1.6 & have a bit of height. Probably a better bet that a diesel for her mileage.

    Thanks,

Scenic is 1999 with 83,000 miles. Bought it about 12/13 years ago with around 30K miles. Other that regular servicing, tyres & changing coils it has given us great service. Starting to look a bit rough now.

If it's been trouble free up to this point, why not hold onto it? Cars don't suddenly start disintegrating, and in fairness, while Renault has a bad reputation for reliability, the original Scenic was a solid and reliable car (which is a lot more than can be said for the model that came out in 2004).

Very true, CaptainSpeed. Next model was pretty bad. Car is worthless now & paint work starting to get a bit rough & missus is just sick of driveing the same car for so many years. Not going to do anything till after Christmas & will decide then.

    Thanks,

we changed our scenic (2002) which was like yours, bulletproof and thrived on neglect and infrequent servicing recently. As it is the second car we went for a Nissan Leaf - no regrets at all. Super cheap running, comfortable and very reliable, so far anyway. Would definitely recommend one at your mileage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,035 ✭✭✭goz83

The only issue with the Leaf is that it is as ugly as fcuk. And still....I am considering one myself :o

But only because I do feck all mileage and generally can't sit in a car for more than a half hour without paying in back pain.

What's the budget OP? You say it's not big, but that means very little. Not big could be 1k, or 10k+

what within reason does the engine size matter? the tax will depend on emissions if its from 2008 on and don't be fooled into thinking simply because an engine is smaller that it is more economical! In fast manufacturers are going back to larger engine sizes in the near future, as in many cases, they are actually more economical in the real world!
