We like to stay in the NL Hotel Leidseplein when we go to Amsterdam. It's small and cheaper than many other places, but not nasty, or full of folk off their heads.

It's a short walk from Leidseplein on Nassaukade. It might be worth your while booking through their own site for better prices, but they are coming in within budget on booking.com.

Just back from Amsterdam last week. First time there. Stayed in the Ramada Apollo , €250 for 3 nights for 2 people also 4 star hotel with free pick up from the airport. 20mins outside the city centre but don't let that put you off as there is a tram right outside the Hotel that you can buy a 48 hour pass for that can take you around the whole city. On the team line into the centre from this house you will pass the Anne frank house and Dam square where all shops and pubs are. Very handy hotel great tram service, expensive city but well worth seeing.

Hi Duck, yes I was looking at this hotel it looks lovely but taught it might be a bit far out, like yourself I have never been to amsterdam so taught it be better to stay in the centre but some of the prices are ridiculous... and also because we will only be there 3 days taught it be handy...

how did you find travelling in and out did it take long to get into the centre?

I spend a week in Amsterdam every November for work and stay here

It is very central, a 5 minute walk to Leidseplein restaurants and nightlife, on the bus route from the airport and on the tram route to access the rest of the city. Close to museums. Canals on your doorstep for boat tours which are beautiful.
Rooms are nice, clean and tidy, staff friendly.
Request a room overlooking the Vondelpark in front of the hotel which will have a small balcony.
