Ceiling tiles removal

So - in one bedroom in the house we have moved into the ceiling is covered with white tiles - I don't think I'm allowed to post a picture but they are old-style tiles, maybe a foot wide max, looks like they are made out of some sort of plaster or plywood/polystyrene type material. What I'm wondering is - how difficult do you think it will be to take these down and will I have just a normal ceiling underneath them (to paint as normal etc?).

Thanks for any thoughts ye have!

They will be polystyrene tiles, and you need to get rid of them asap. They're an absolute health hazard. If a fire breaks out, the molten tiles will drip on you.

Scrape them off and the ceiling will be OK although how easy to remove, and what will be left depends on what type of glue has been used.

I think newer tiles contain a fire retardant. If they're older ones I'd guess the toxic smoke will get to you before you start to worry about dripping molten polystyrene.

OP, you'll probably need to try and take one off an see how it goes. They could be fixed up with small dots of adhesive which should make them easy to remove, if not........

They were often put up to hide something else, so don't be surprised to get a surprise when you look underneath them :pac:

So I eventually got round to taking these tiles down - turns out they were aeroboard/foam tiles. Came down very easy, but each one was held in place with 4 blobs of glue that took off a layer with it when scraping off. Ceiling underneath looks fine - just very patchy now.

Lots of filling to be done - or maybe even a skim of plaster - before painting.

    Thanks for your comments above.
