Hi, we've bought a Morso S80 inset stove, 9KW. Can't get it fitted by the firm from whom we bought it. Had someone out today to look at fitting it. He says we need a granite surround to stop the chimney breast from cracking. This is the first we've ever heard of this. The stove doesn't come with a frame. I've looked online & on Pinterest & can't see any stoves with a granite frame. I really don't want one but if it's absolutely necessary then we've no choice. I get the impression the guy who looked at it just wants to sell us the granite. Can anyone advise if a granite surround is necessary. Thanks

    Hi.
We have just installed a Morso S81 insert stove ourselves. We also installed a new fireplace. ALL suppliers we talked to and many of the images we saw online show a granite surround. No one told us the reason for the granite surround was to prevent the chimney cracking. It may well serve that purpose but I had just assumed it was at least partially for the aesthetics. BTW, the seller of your stove should have asked you at the time of purchase if you wanted either a 3-sided or 4 sided frame. I opted for the 3 sided since almost all of the pictures of the fireplace we were buying had inserts with 3-sided frames. However, I'm sort of regretting it now because this particular stove is quite small and the addition of the 4th side (Ie the bottom side) would make it look a little bigger and raise it up a little and position it more centrally in the fireplace. We went with a Nantucket Alpine White fireplace with a black granite surround and hearth. It has a slightly higher mantel which doesn't help with the stove size. Its not that bad however and still looks good and will probably grow on me. The seller also installed everything for us and we were very pleased with the outcome. I don't think I can share the suppliers name here but I'm sure there is a way I can PM you with the details and maybe send you a picture of our installation. Hope that helps

I was also told you cant get an insert without a stone surround either, its the plaster that keeps cracking. You dont have to have granite though, there are other types of stone like slate that do the same job.

we installed an insert (11KW) without a surround -- plaster cracked during the first winter and we then tiled the breast

PM me with your email if you want some pics
