I’m out a little under a year now, and something that’s really helped has been LGBT-themed films and TV shows, reflecting stuff I’ve gone through and different perspectives. A few favourites have been the likes of…

4th Man Out – an American comedy/drama about a guy that comes out to his drinking buddies, and how they all deal with it. Currently on Netflix.

GBF – a fun, Mean Girls-esque teen comedy about a guy who’s outed in high school, and the various social factions vying for his favour as a GBF (Gay Best Friend.) Very sharp dialogue and humorous moments.

Boys – a Dutch film about the budding romantic feelings between two teenage lads on an athletics team. Very sweet film.

Shelter—American drama about an early twenty-something who falls for his best friend’s older brother. Very heartfelt and genuine.

Free Fall – German drama about two police officers who fall for each other.

Anyone else have any recommendations for- or comments on- films or TV shows that represent LGBT characters well? Even ‘straight’ shows with well-written/portrayed LGBT characters…

Weekend- story of a "two night stand" between two guys. Really well acted and written.

Any Day Now- true story of a gay male couple in the 70's (one a drag performer played by alan Cumming who is amazing in everything and the other a straight acting lawyer) who find a young man with Down syndrome whose Mum is very neglectful. It's the story of them taking him in and attempting to get custody.

Milk- true story of Harvey Milk who broke down barriers in Us Politics in the 70's.

"Before stonewall" and "After Stonewall"- two sister documentaries on the history of being lgbtq in the US. Really great viewing- particularly the first one which cover the period before the Stonewall riots so it goes into the 1920's and across the wars.

A Single Man- beautifully shot and acted directorial debut from Tom Ford. You can see his style influence everywhere. Tells the story of a man grieving for his long term partner, in the early 1960's when he couldn't really mourn openly.

We were there- documentary covering the AIDS crisis in the 80's.

But I'm a Cheerleader- highly HIGHLY camp comedy starring Ru Paul as a camp counsellor at an LGBTQ conversion camp. (That's available in its entirety on YouTube)

tbh I've loads more recommendations but most of the ohthers have a focus on lesbian issues so not sure if that would interest you?

+1 to those. Particularly Weekend; I thought that was great. Like a gay 'Before Sunrise'.

And I'll add C.R.A.Z.Y.. French Canadian coming-of-age / coming-out story. Set in the 60s/70s with a great soundtrack to go with it.

Latter Days - A young mormon missionary moves to LA and falls for the next door neighbour.

Pride - Historical dramedy about LGBT groups giving their support to coal miners on strike in the 80's.

Hey B and C the forum is for all so yeah put the lesbian stuff up

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

+1 on Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Don't forget the amazing soundtrack to that movie.

Oh wow I haven't seen Priscilla in years. I remember the last time I watched it I was literally in tears laughing, such a great movie.

Was that Hugo Weaving's (Agent Smith) breakout role? He wouldn't have been well known outside Australia before that I don't think.

August - great film about a gay man who returns to Los Angeles after living in Barcelona and finds that his former boyfriend is now shacked up with a smoking hot South American guy.

Softlad - lead actor is the guy who played gay man Paul in Eastenders (Ben's boyfriend). About a young gay dancer who is having an affair with his brother in law who is married to the lead's older sister.

Tiger Orange - two gay brothers, one very out and promiscusious and the other in the closet. Younger brother returns to rural California from LA and raises hell with his wild ways. Older closeted brother runs a hardware store and meets a guy he falls for but will he find love?

Lots of other pretty good gay themed filmson Netflix that I'll dig out and post up later!

Cuatros Lunas used to be on Netflix, it's an excellent film depicting the lives of four different couples. If you get a chance then I definitely recommend seeing it!

The HBO series Looking is pretty good, set in SF about a group of gay men who are friends and explores gay life in San Fran, brings up questions on having a HIV infected partner, having an open relationship. It ran for two seasons but I thought it was good. Russell Tovey was in it.

Really enjoyed it -- I remember the whole miners vs Thatcher years very well - she was determined to destroy unions in general and the NUM were top of her list. I hadn't associated the timing of the film with the beginning of the HIV/AIDS chapter in our history though :( It was sad to see that one of the activists - Mark Ashton - had died at the age of 26.

Thanks again for reminding us of it.

I'd never heard of Mark Ashton so I looked him up. He was involved in, and achieved, quite a lot before he died.

I'm actually glad I looked into this because I found this documentary that he participated in that was made in 1982. It was filmed by a gay and lesbian youth group in London. It is centered on the experiences of young gay people at the time, including a young Jimmy Somerville, and how society perceived them. It also features the crew interviewing people on the street and asking them about what they understood about homosexuality and how they would react if they discovered a family member was gay, considering it was the early 80s many of the reactions were predictable but I was heartened by some of the more positive responses from people.

There are also some very unpleasant stories of violent homophobia against both men and women and indifference of the police at the time :( These stories start at 15.30

It's very much worth a look and it gives a fascinating snapshot of the times

Just watched Beauty and the Beast. Not an LGBT film but it should be mentioned for being the first Disney movie with 2 gay characters. It's amazingly close to the original movie.

Plan-B, Hawaii and Taekwando, films by Marco Berger all 3 films are brilliant.
