Just wondering would I be better off waiting until the new year to buy a secondhand car?
Would the price drop a bit?
Car would be between 25 to 30 grand.

    Are you trading in?

Cos if you are, then remember your own car is a year older too, so maybe no difference buying now or new year.

If you have time on your hands and no trade-in then the reality is that the car shouldn't cost anymore in January than it is now. So in theory by waiting until January shouldn't cost you anything extra money wise. However you do run the risk that someone else might buy the car in the mean time.

Is importing from the UK an option?

I was hoping it would be a few grand less in the new year bazz as the reg would be a year older.
Import would be a huge option as same car seems to cost around €4k less including the vet.

Dealers don't usually drop their prices on Jan 1st, they start reducing them this time of year in order to shift them to make way for fresh trade-ins in January against new cars. The car you are interested in could be priced similarly in January depending how well it is priced right now or how much the car stands the dealer.

Regarding the UK, don't expect much of a further price drop until close to next March as that is the time their registration changes rather than going by calendar year. For example if you were to buy a January 16 reg UK car the reg will be deemed 2 years old for depreciation from March 2017 while you would still get a 161 plate when you import it here.

Personally if I had no car to trade-in and cash on the hip I'd seriously look at buying in the UK.

Oh yeah, actually forgot about reg change time.
Would Irish dealers drop in January.
It will more than likely be UK though as I don't see the car I want on any website in Ireland.

As I was saying Irish dealers might drop their prices in November and may not drop them again till late February or March. There are other factors that come into play also like how long they have the car in stock, how much they allowed the previous owner for it, how many of the same model they have for sale also, is it a model in low supply and high demand, etc.

It's an is300h f-sport in black or blue.

Besides price my options don't seem too good in Ireland.

Would the vrt drop on the 1st of Jan?
Also do sellers in UK generally stick to their asking price or is there much room for haggling?

    There is 2 or 3 2013 is300's with 40,000miles for around £1695. Vrt is €3400.

There is one for £14, 000 something with 92,000 miles but want one with less milage than that.

I'd wait it out and see if your not in a mad rush

I bought a temp car for herself on the 21st dec last year from a well known dealer in dublin it was advertised at 3750 i got it for 3200 which was very competitive at the time

So go in and make the offer and see if you can wait until the last minute do,
Circumstances dictated our purchase but go in and try the worse they can say is no.

What your looking for is well worth a trip the UK

Thinking strongly of one of these too. Have you driven one? I have only tried team CT200h and didn't likeven the styling but found the drive fine.

Ct200h has really lovely interior, lovely front and buy, but when you look at it from the side, it just looks like they welded together 2 different cars. The lines and shapes just feel so out of place.

. The lines and shapes just feel so out of place.

The side view is sweet. There are more curves than you'd see on most cars, but that's a good thing.

No I haven't driven one yet.
    They seem to be scarce.

Same as that. Have to go and hour and a half drive to test drive one. Not ready to change for a couple of months so I don't want to torment myself by driving one.

What's the story with paying for a car in England?
Is there a limit on a visa debit card when abroad?

Blade - we checked all this out with the bank before we left and the amount you are speaking about is fine and you should be ok to use a card terminal in the dealers over in the UK.

We have just recently bought our third car in the UK. The one we brought over is widely available here - but specs are much higher in the UK in general. We got a very high spec for the model of the car we bought and we are absolutely thrilled with the car.

the one you are choosing is just gorgeous lucky you.!!

in the end we didnt take the chance though because as it turned out the travelling arrangements that suited us meant we collected the car over a weekend and i was afraid to take a chance not being able to contact a bank if anything went wrong during the transaction.

Ive recently posted here actually saying that the VRT is actually coming in 340e more than the many many times we did the calculations on the VRT site (have copies of them) - VRT was 3606 and is now coming in at over 3900e (Just checked again today as vrt apt is thursday) so a little peed off with that tbh.
BUT it was still very much worth our while to to over we reckon we saved about 3500-4000k ! and its not a posh car !

best of luck with it all and happy driving !

    Change of plan slightly.
Might be going for this white one now.
    It's a 2014 with 45000 miles on it.
Full leather, premium sat nav and Mark Levinson(never heard one but saw 1 or 2 lads on here mention one before:pac:)
Booked a flight over for next week so hopefully everything works out.

Rang about car above and it was sold this morning!!
    Gutted!!:(
Ah well, at least the flight over was only €12.99.
Called to Cork Lexus and checked out a brand new one.
    Absolutely stunning.
I was only half way in and it felt like the seat was starting to cuddle me.
Felt really snug and just a lovely place to be.

Know nothing about the car, except the pics I've seen of it here.

Have to say, it's a nice looking motor, but the black doesn't look good on it (at least in pictures anyway). The blue looks well :) And although i think white looks a bit cheap and 'vanny' on 99% of cars, i'd still rather it in white than black based on the little ive seen of it.

Fair play to you going for something nice :)

They had a black non f sport one in Cork today. It actually looked stunning.
    It was sold.
Sales man said they don't stay too long on the forecourt.
Not that many for sale so seem to go fast.
I don't like black on most cars but there are some few that it looks really well on and I thought this was one of the few.
Car looks smaller in real life too.
Seats feel beautiful as does the steering wheel and the electronic dial and gauges feel like u are preparing to go in to warp drive!

    Red Seats and door cards:pac:
Have no idea what to make of them.
Could love them or hate them
I'd have to see them in the flesh.
    uqjz2xtl.jpg

I'm still cracking that car yesterday was sold:mad:
Can't find that spec for the price it was anywhere.
It was a 2014 and it was costing (vrt included) €6000 cheaper than what the Lexus salesman in Cork said he'd want for a 2013 one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,606 ✭✭✭✭blade1

Just off the phone with a Lexus main dealer in UK.
After putting a deposit on a 2013 one with 32k miles.
Full BLACK leather, premium sat nav(£2000 upgrade that is remote controlled) and heated and ventilated seats.
    Roll on Thursday!!!!!
