We bought ours in NY and got it valued in ESL in Dublin.

You need the GIA or whatever certificate and they match the diamond to the cert and value it on that basis. Quick enough as far as I remember and very reasonable.

We used Irish Valuations in Dublin and found the service excellent

Got two copies of a very detailed report with pictures and a backup cd with the report on it. Wouldn't know more about diamonds than the average person but found him extremely knowledgeable. You don't need the cert for him, he'll assess all that in lieu of one

Oh one more thing, wherever you get it done just make sure you are present and the ring never leaves your sight. Have heard many a story of diamonds being swapped out. Any legit service should do it in front of you while you wait.

Do you need to get the ring valued for insurance?

We used Carol Clarke on Dawson Street.
Bought in NYC so had the GIA Cert to match up etc
She also valued the wedding band that had no GIA cert, so they used trig to calculate weight and thus value.

Cost was €75. We have used her for 3 pieces now a all were bought abroad.

Yes about 60% but I think they over-value it for insurance purposes anyway, so it's not strictly the replacement cost.

Patrick Glynn Jewellers on Middle Abbey Street.

Traditional 'old school' jeweller beside Arnotts

Didn't book, we just walked in - it was recommended to us so said we'd chance our arm. It was about €50 I think

I couldn't recommend this place enough but then again he's family. :)

Patrick is a gent although I'm not sure he's working there anymore.

I bought my wifes ring there and the service was exceptional. They also clean and polish all jewellery perfectly and not how a typical high street store would.

We used Carol as well. She's one of only a handful of gemologists in Ireland. She charges flat fee, rather than % of value, unlike many other stores. We got a fairly detailed valuation, all while you wait.

I left mine, but if was only for an hour. I was happy with that though as it had been recommended to us by a friend whose family member work there. Fields want to post your ring somewhere apparently!! That's a definite no no.
