My mother had dental work done 10 days ago. She told her dentist she was on blood thinners when she made the appointment for dental work and he didn't advise her to talk to her Doctor and seemed fine about it once she had the work done, the area bleed which was normal after an extraction but it had bleed for 10 days now she has been back to see him and he just said it would be fine and she has seen her doctor also who put her on a course of antibotics as it now has an infection. It has been bleeding a lot since last night and her doctor advised her to go see the dentist immedinately. When we rang he said that he was in the middle of a root canal and would see if her could squeeze her in.

has anyone else had this issue with a Dentist?

The dentist has since phoned her back and told her to go to A&E. It would appear he should never have done the extraction. also on the day he did it he was in a rush as he had a family emergency to attend to. Wondering now did he do something he shouldn't have. She is extremely worried as it wont' stop bleeding.

First priority should be to get medical attention& stop the bleeding. Asap.
Once your mums' health is stable, then the focus can be shifted back to the who/how/why.

She is at the hospital now, and hopefully they will be able to stop the bleeding from her gums. I think we will not be going back to that Dentist again. She had explained to him what medication she was on during her first consultation with him so he was aware of the facts before she went to him for the extraction.

General advice is to stay on these meds for extractions and minimal treatment in a session (one or two standard extractions, not multiple difficult teeth).

The socket would ideally be packed and stitched afterwards, did this happen??

At a course recently given by OS AB, he said that protocol of stopping anticoagulants prior to soft tissue xla was no longer advisable, patient more likely to suffer medical issues associated with stopping anticoagulants than with post op haemorrhage.

Op, people on anticoagulants are acutely aware of risk of prolonged bleeding when they cut themselves, this is an unfortunate complication associated with extractions, but stopping the medication prior to extraction may have posed a greater risk to your mother and prolonged the discomfort caused by a bad tooth.

Your mum may well experience the same issue again if she has a tooth extraction in the future, regardless of what dentist she sees.
Some practices refuse to treat these patients for extractions,& refer onwards instead- not because of the increased risk of bleeding, but because because of the associated bad PR (similar to above)
That particular blood thinner is quite different from Aspirin or Warfarin....
Hope your mum is sorted now.
