Will a broken ABS ring damage the ABS sensor?

My car has an abs problem. Mechanic ordered a sensor for 45euro. Then when he was fitting sensor he rang to say the abs ring was broken.. I asked was there any need in the first place for a sensor and he said 'yeah, the broken ring wrecked the sensor'..

I've googled this and watched Youtube videos of fellas replacing their abs ring and none of them say anything about the sensor being damaged..

Does anyone know if this is likely?

It's possible but not too common.

If the ring wrecked the sensor (and this would be very unlikely), then you would see signs of physical damage to the sensor itself.

From what you are saying, it sounds to me like the sensor was assumed broken before it was noticed that the abs ring was cracked.

What kind of car is it?

It is possible that it could happen.
