Hyundai tuscon 2008 broken timing belt

    Hi. Driving yesterday. In a 50km zone just after starting Jeep. A small click and Jeep stopped. Belt is broken. Anyone got any experience of this. What amount of damage done. Cost etc

    The damage is usually pretty bad, at best a complete head rebuild, new valves, guides etc at worst a hole in the piston so new engine time

    I actually thought newer engines were designed with clearances to avoid serious damage.

    Some engines are non interference but from a quick google search it appears yours is interference meaning that when the belt brakes the pistons come into contact with valves etc which basically means your engine is toast. Probably easier to source a new engine rather than rebuilding

    Timing belt went in my 2010 Scenic last March, had to get a new engine, the bill wasn't pretty.

    Not sure if this is relevant in todays cars, but I always remember being told that if your car cut out and you suspected a broken belt, NEVER try to restart it as it causes more damage.

    Of course, its a natural reaction if your car cuts out to try restarting it.

    Did you restart it? Or does it matter or not these days?

    It does matter but realistically you will be adding catastrophic damage to already catastrophic damage! It can be the difference between 8 and 16 valve guides etc

    Hi. An update. Belt did snap. Rocker cover is taken off . Some of the cam shaft valve followers cracked x3.. Have sourced a full set. Not too expensive. Won't know til next week when cam shaft is removed. Mechanic thinks no valve or head damage. We're crossing fingers. I'll update next week.. For interest sake he had one already last year a tuscon and it also got away with valve followers. Here's hoping

    If it's an 8v engine there is a reasonable chance of getting away with it, 16v and forget it

    I had a timing belt snap on a Honda 2.0 16 valve engine a few years ago doing 120 on the M50 (before 3rd lane appeared).

    I was told to forget it and buy another engine and not to even bother trying to fix it. I put a new belt in it and it started right up and is still going to the amazement of my mechanic :)

    So there's always hope !!

    Hi guys., thanks for all the advice. Jeep is back on the road, all that were damaged were 3 cam followers but I replaced the set. New timing belt and kit, new water pump. Took down sump to check it. full service. cost 1 grand. Back motoring.
