As they would say in Ballyvourney, 'Aithníonn ciaróg ciaróg eile'
i.e. It takes one to know one.

Big fan of Ballyv. And Coolea. Know a few very sound people from there. Though the area would have a reputation for a weakness for poitin.

Ballyvourney (Irish: Baile Bhúirne, meaning "Town of the Beloved", also spelled Baile Mhúirne, Irish pronunciation: [ˈbˠalʲə ˈvʷuːrˠnʲə] ),[1] is a Gaeltacht village in south-west County Cork, Ireland. It is a civil parish in the barony of Muskerry West and is also an ecclesiastical parish in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cloyne[2]

It also marks one end of the famous "Ballyvourney-Macroom stretch", the road between those 2 towns which is a complete and utter joke considering it is the main road from Cork to Killarney/Tralee.

Ballyvourney does boast one of the finest Irish traditional male singers in recent years, lead singer for both The Gloaming and Afro Celt Soundsystem, Iarla O Lionaird.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

The O Lionaird family very much involved in singing and music there afaik.

It was also the sometime home of the great Irish poet Sean O'Riordan and of course Sean O'Riada lived in Coolea.

And jam making. :) (AFAIK the Folláin jam company, based in Ballyvourney/Cúil Aodha, is run by members of the Ó Lionáird family).

Going to Coolea as a young fella for the entire summer I don't know what was worse, going to the highest pub in Ireland,The Mills Inn or the shop across the road from it in Ballyvourney.

Heard about him 2 years ago when his daughter Liadh ran for the European parliament.

And don't forget Coolea cheese and 9 White Deer beer, all from Ballyvourney.

Now OP - I need to be specific, are you referring to Baile Bhúirne, Baile Mhic Íre, or both?

Didn't know that, think they opened up a big new plant in Ballyvourney - hundreds work in the industrial units near the GAA pitches there, pretty sure they get tax breaks because they are located in a Gaeltacht.

The swimming pool in Coolea also? or Cul Aodha as the locals like to call it.

There's a wonderful artisan cheese called Coolea made down in that part of the country. It's a lovely alternative to dishes that ask for a French soft cheese as part of the recipie.

I have lots of friends from Ballvourney and also from Coolea. Great people from out there! Coolea also has an outdoor swimming pool which is gas.

That bendy road between Macroom and Ballvourney is a pain in the arse though. Are they ever going to build that bypass?....

    Coimeádann siad ár gcultúr beo.

Gasping now at the thought of a creamy black pint sitting for me on the counter in the Mills.

The road on to Killarney is a complete boggles alright.
