Shoulder looks (checking blind spots)

    Hey all,

My main instructor has told me all along to do a "shoulder look" (ie turn to check blind spots) before moving off. So if the driver's side is away from the kerb it's Middle Mirror - 1st Gear - Right Shoulder Look - Right Mirror - Right Indicator - Go (if safe). If the driver's side is beside the kerb, it's the same but to the left (Left Shoulder Look - Left Mirror - Left Indicator - Go).

I had a pretest today and the guy told me I'd get a fault for not looking over both shoulders before pulling off. On the previous pretest, with the same guy, I drove the same way and he didn't even mention it.

Just wondering if everyone else does two swivels before pulling off? Reversing, I'd do two. But pulling off from the kerb, I've always been taught to do one, to the side the road is on. Will I get 4 faults and fail for not doing both?

(On a related note, I read in the RSA book to do over-shoulder looks when changing lane, but I've been told by 2 instructors never to look away from the road for that long while moving & to check the left/right mirror multiple times before changing lane instead.)

It'd be advisable to make sure no one is stepping out around your car. Which may be why the pretester mentioned it.

Looking in the mirror a few times doesn't really help you gauge something you can't see. I'd watched a few Vlogs of a UK driving instructor who mentioned leaning forward while looking towards the mirror helps open up the field of vision. But this starts going into the realms of exaggerated movement. From my experience I've noticed it's fare easier to look over the left while driving, than it is the right.
