Anyone know why there seems to be an Aer lingus Airbus A320 passenger plane flying around in circles in Drumcondra (Griffith Avenue). It has circled 5 times so far in 30 minutes.

7 times now in 50 minutes

AFAIK Aer Lingus hasn't had a 747 in its fleet for over 15 years.

That's what happens when you park in North Dublin

Typical when I get the brain wave to take a pic the A320 decides it's had enough of circuling in Drumcondra.

Hopefully some neighbours on boards can prove my case!

I'd say the most likely reason was it was waiting for Runway 28, Dublins main (and longer) runway to open after the works which started last night. Due to reopen at 0500 daily pending inspections.

Dublin Airport released a statement regarding same on their social media yesterday.

My guess is that it wasn't the same aircraft but all of the EI transatlantic early arrivals on final approach to runway 34.....

According to Flightradar they used 34 (as 28 wasn't available as per earlier post)

    Mystery solved??

Nope! We still don't know what circuling is.

No need to speak for us all. Wit the help of a small bit of common sense some of us will know that's just a simple typo and the OP actually meant to write "circling"

No, I think it's just an abbreviation the 'kids' are using for 'circulationing'.

out of curiosity do the numbers have some meaning?

Dublin Airport has two runways, than can be used in any four variations.

The runways are Runway 10/28 and 16/34.

The numbers stem from the coordinates. Runway 10 is 100° and 28 is 280° etc. It's the same runway but depending on which is active you approach from that end of it.

Which runway is operational depends on wind direction amongst other things.

Runway 28 is most commonly used in Dublin.

interesting thanks, is that an international standard?

    It is indeed.

If you Google images of Dublin Airport, you'll see the runways marked with these numbers on either end.

    I can confirm your observation.

It woke both my myself & my wife in South Dublin. She thought it was several planes but I said I guess its the same one circling & waiting to get a landing slot at Dublin airport. Quite why this occurred is beyond me, but we can confirm that a jet was circling for a long time in the early hours.

Sounded like it was low flying too.

Generally the best place to ask would be the Flightradar24 thread in aviation and aircraft.

There was nothing circling, it was aircraft landing on RWY34 due to works on RWY10/28.

    At 4:07, EI104 from New York-JFK landed,
At 4:10, EI100 from Newark landed,
At 4:33, EI136 from Boston landed,
At 4:35, EI118 from Washington landed,
At 4:38, EI130 from Hartford landed,
At 4:41, EI122 from Chicago landed

All aircraft were A330's or 757's, no 747's or A320's sadly.

But (as previously posted in post 27) would that explain us been woken in South Dublin by what sounded like a low flying circling aircraft?

Flight path takes planes straight over the city center, RWY34 faces 340 degrees (as explained earlier), so aircraft will travel in a north west direction over the city towards the airport.

Its not exactly a new thing, its a rare enough things, but RWY28/10 is regularly closed for various works between 11pm-5am. RWY16 is generally used, but when the wind necessitates RWY34 is used.

So my wife was actually correct, it was many planes and not just one circling as I suggested!

Yep, your wife was correct, it was 6 different aircraft landing.

You wouldn't have a holding pattern over a very densely populated area, in Ireland at least!

I was tempted to ask how the OP knew it was the same aircraft circling....and not several different aircraft.....at 4am, it would have been fairly dark (even allowing for the supermoon) so difficult enough to establish the aircraft type...let alone its marking.

Occams Razor dictates that it was several aircraft on final approach to runway 34....
