Leon Russell died in his sleep yesterday at 74 years of age. He has had health problems for a while... he had brain fluid and heart problems.

An excellent piano player, he led Joe Cocker's band, wrote hit songs, played in Phil Spector's wall of sound, as well as with Sinatra, Sam Cooke, The Monkeys, The Byrds, Beach Boys and much more that I'm not aware of.

I'll admit I don't know a huge amount about him, but since I didn't yet hear about it on Irish radio, I said I'd post something. Unfortunately he kind of got forgotten about over the decades.

He was also Elton John's main inspiration as a piano player and song writer.

His 'Retrospective' album is brilliant. So many great songs.

A prolific talent, a superstar session musician (not many of those) and a true legend. Played with the best of them and he sure knew how to jam!

RTE Radio covered it this morning and played a few tracks in tribute . So, not forgotten nor overlooked. You just didn't hear it.

This morning Marty Whelan played a Carpenters cover of a song he wrote called This Masquerade

He looks healthy enough in that pic.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)
