I bought a return ticket to Basel for €20 return on Ryanair, It is for 7 nights/8days. I don't intend on staying in Basel as I would like to see some of the country and I am just wondering what would people here recommend?
I like mountains which is a help, I don't ski but I like walking/hiking. I like museums whether that is natural history or science or about the country. I also like art galleries and have already earmarked the Kunstmuseum in Basel as a place to visit.
I have a wide range of interests so throw your ideas at me, I am still deciding if I should go, as I have have not made up my mind where to go.
The cities should look nice dressed up for Christmas and with Christmas markets.
Basel is close to the French/German border so expand your ideas to places close in these countries if you want.
    Thank you.

Have a look at Colmar in France. I am planning a flight to Basle for next September with a two night stay in Colmar as well.

Walking and hiking in a lot of places may be a bad idea in December due to the weather here. Zurich had a nice Christmas market last year, down near the lake/opera house but not sure if it'll be the same this year.

As you like hiking but not skiing, snowshoeing may be an option for you. I've never done it, but it's supposed to be a lot of fun (and hard work). Might be worth looking into.
