NCT retest on tyres?

    Hi lads,

I'm sure this has probably been asked a dozen times here before so please excuse me.

I'm trying to help my neighbour get her car through the test. It failed on a few things, front brake imbalance and a CV boot. I have just finished putting on a new boot and sorted the brakes, but on the sheet they failed her tyres on the front axel.

She has one summer and one winter. And I'm having some trouble getting a winter tyre for that size before the retest date.

If i rotate the tyres before the test, ie switch the front axel with the rear. Will the tester only check the front axel as that's all it was failed on? Or check them all?

Thanks a mil for any input.

I'd imagine it will be all 4 checked, otherwise it would be a massive loophole in you could just swap wheels to pass.

This is what it failed on
Check that tyres on the same axle are of the same size, aspect ratio(Note 3 on next page) and type (i.e. cross-ply, radial-ply, run-flat, winter or summer).

Tester may look at the other axle, you never know..
There is a safety reason tyres on the same axle should be the same type.

You'd be surprised! It's the nct after all.

I have swapped tyres and its worked. He checked what failed and off he went to get the cert. It really depends on the tester. Worth a shot tho if you think its the right thing to do.

Same here, I drove home, swapped them and drove back an hour later. He just checked the offending axel.

Bad idea IMO. I hope a car with such tyres never has to stop behind me in a hurry.

Before some here wet themselves with excitement and disapproval i had the same issue as the op......winter tyre/summer tyre. The tyres were perfect.

To put a spanner in the works, I had a similar issue and he checked all 4 when it was only the rear two that caused the problem.

Depends on the tester I think

It's not the fact that the tyres might be worn, it's the different characteristics within the tyres. That a summer tyre will perform worse in winter or vice versa and the difficulties this may pose to the driver under an emergency braking scenario.

If one tyre grips much harder than another, you could lose control a lot easier.

Yep...one or two testers has said the same to me previously. Drive around the corner....change or swap the tyre and come back. It's a lot more common than people think.

Worth a shot, the new tyre is on order and it's a winter like all the rest. But the retest is before i get the tyre, if it works it works. Just a visual retest. once I can get it to pass on the breaks.

Iv yet to have to happen to me. In all the time i had the jeep with the mixed tyres i never had issues with it. Winter tyres arent even particularly needed in this country. It silly how some people are so obsessed with seasonal tyres.

I wasn't arguing the pro's and cons of seasonal tyres in Ireland, just the cons of using one winter and one summer tyre in the same axle.

Fair enough point taken i misread what you meant. I guess my point is that it is still better to have such a scenario than to have proper worn thread and swapping them just to pass the nct.

NCT fails people for having mixed tyres on the same axle.
    Toyotafanboi have explained why.
It's kinda worrying to people still think it's ok to try to get away with it anyway.

For my sake, not yours, please keep the tyres on your car in tiptop shape and don't mix. I don't want you careering into me on a wet bend.

I didnt die when i had my jeep nor did anyone else i never even came close to crashing so your hyperbole is a bit silly oh and what may amaze you is that i never skidded out when braking hard it handled perfectly well as much as a jeep can in the rain and snow. Plenty of off road driving with it an all and yep you guessed it no issues with how the tyres preformed......mad that isnt it.

    Item 37:Tyre specification.

failed once on 1 tyre and had all 4 checked when retesting.

Yes but both tyres will perform differently when pushed.

    Just to update this.

Car passed the test after tyre rotation. Don't be worrrying, she now has 4 tyres all the same season, as the one we needed wasn't available in the correct size before the test.

Guess it depends who you get on the day. Surprised they failed the tyre, but let the car pass on an airbag light showing, and two burst cv boots spraying grease on the brake discs. She'all be graaaaand!!
