NCT put wrong name on fail sheet

    Hello guys

So today I brought my car in for the nct. Gave them the log book and ID with my name on them. Car failed on a lot of things and garage says it'll be 1400 for repairs (brake hoses and front suspension).

But they put some randomers name on my fail sheet, when I was called to the window he called the randomers name then my car 07 mondeo so all I heard was 07 mondeo, didn't notice the name was wrong until after I went to the garage for pricing. The mechanic called me Cathal, my names not Cathal...

Does this mean I get a free NCT retest? Would this be grounds for an appeal?

Personally I dont think so, how long have you owned the car?

Did you book your NCT test before the car was fully in your name or anything?

Did he have his NCT testers hat on?

NCT probably expect you to mention it right there and then.
Go back and ask and they will probably correct it for you.

I'm pretty sure if your name is on the log book and your drivers licence then this shouldn't have happened. Booked it 1 week ago and it was fully in my name for months. The girl at the reception was distracted talking to her colleague while checking me in so maybe she put the previous customers name on it or a name that was on the computer screen or something..

Cathal. I like it. From now on everyone call me Cathal. Thanks.

Maybe these faults were on Cathal Randomer's car and not yours!

probably the name of the person of the last person that tested it. not a big deal.

id be more concerned of the 1400 euro repair cost than the free test:eek:

I'd be more worried about how the car got into such a bad state that it needs €1400 worth of repairs to get it through a basic test, unless there are some serious issues with emissions that require some expensive exhaust parts. There should be nothing massively expensive on brake pipes and front suspension on a Mondeo

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

I think the garage I went to was probably trying to rip me off though..

It needs 2 new front suspension (€400), 2 rear brake hoses(€400), 1 rear wheel bearing(€400), battery needs to be secured(€100 but can do it myself for a 5r :pac:) and then just needs some power steering fluid...

One of the headlights is missing a pin that keeps it in place and the garage told me I'd need a whole new headlight (€180).

I know too well this is ridiculous pricing.. Atlas Swords..

Ok so decided to check how much all the parts for the whole lot would be on micksgarage.. €300.. I can do most of it myself bar the brake hoses (looks like a pain the ass).

I guess its just hit and miss with atlas :/

by the sound of things id advise you to get a mechanic to do the repairs. 2 brake hoses would be 50 euro. are you sure its not 2 discs or calipers or new lines- sounds a bit excessive ??

do you really have the know how and tools to attack a wheel bearing job?

might be better off going to a few garages with your sheet and getting a price

Are you sure there wasn't another 07 mondeo in at the time?

Yeah its no bother to me, I've done bearings for a boat trailer which is much worse since the car bearing comes within a new hub making it much more simple. And no I'm not an idiot, I did the brake calipers, rotors and pads 2 months ago, it is the brake hoses so atlas swords are trying to overcharge here, not the first time they've done it either!

Yeah the wrong name was even on the receipt I got when I checked in.. The fail sheet has my reg on it as well.

I wasn't saying you were , just going by your 1st post you didn't seem alarmed by the repair cost just the 28 euro retest.

brake hoses are fairly cheap so it sounds like he wanted to jump on your back.

if you are doing the headlight yourself don't forget to get it focused

The wrong name is more than likely the previous owners. I bought my car off a neighbour and when I got it tested two years later it printed her name. The guy changed it ( tho he said it didn't matter anyway ) but the next test it again printed her name. For some reason the system reverts back to her name everytime despite the log book being in mine for years now.

As far as I'm aware, you must be the registered owner of the car in order to have it tested.
Your situation is not merely a clerical error. The NCT company is obliged to have correct records and their failure to do so portrays them in a poor light. If they are so careless in matters such as this, then what else might they be careless about?
Remember, that company has been employed by the State to ensure your car is safe to drive. They have a huge duty of care in this regard, especially to you. If they can't be trusted to get a simple thing such as the paperwork right, then what can they be trusted to do?
Imagine what could happen that in the event of an insurance claim you presented your nct cert to the insurers and the wrong owners name appeared on the cert?
If I was you I'd complain to the head honchos in the nct firm.

I wouldn't say hit or miss with Atlas, I'd say give them a wide miss. They're ridiculously expensive compared to anywhere else I've ever used.

I agree. Very remiss of them. They badly need a paramilitary wing that could storm the dept of transport offices in Shannon every now and then and hang people by their toenails until all vehicle records were 100% correct.

Can't see it being a problem. The nct goes with the car. It could have a dozen owners from one test to the next. Likewise with tax. Records would show it was an admin oversight with the centre rather than client. In my case the nct guy said it really didn't matter.

You don't need to be the registered owner of the car to have it tested. You just need your driving licence to confirm your identity.
