Does anyone know if there are speed cameras in the Limerick tunnel?

PS not sure if this is the correct place for this.

The Gardai have regular speed traps at either end of the tunnel especially in northern direction just at exit to Caherdavin

Thanks for the reply but by speed traps do you mean the gardai themselves or static speed cameras?

There are not. There are however often Gardai with hair driers at either end.

Just as a by the way, if they clock you speeding do you find out straight away away or does it come in the post?

Sounds like someone's been a "Naughty Boy", or are you just "asking on behalf of a friend". :D

The Traffic Corp have used both a speed van and regular traffic corp car/motor cycle with the hair dryer at both ends of the tunnel. It's quite a good money earner for them too as the normal speed limit in the tunnel is 80kph yet idiots do upwards of 100kph through it regularly. Pity they don't fine drivers for not switching their headlights on when driving through the tunnel too.

No camera in tunnel to record speed. Have seen handheld (hair dryer), and mounted (tripod) either just before or after the exit to Caherdavin. If it's the hairdryer, you'd have to be pulled in. If it's the tripod, you'd get it in the post.

Added rant at end. People who can't use the express lane! :-D If I see one more person stop in it, waiting for their turn...

You should have seen the caherdavin exit after the tunnel before the Maori game, there was people in the overtaking lane, stopped and trying to force their way in to the exit lane. Really annoying and extremely dangerous.

I went through the tunnel a couple months ago when it had a 60kph speed restriction (shortly after that idiot overheight trucker smashed it up) and I thought I was going to be killed; I didn't know if they had any cameras in the tunnel and I wasn't going to take the risk, but I lost count of how many people almost plowed into my rear bumper before swerving out to overtake.

Edit: and yes, my lights were on; I drive a beige car and it's Ireland, they're always on. :pac:

I'd be calling traffic watch on that. Could get someone killed arsing like that.

I would if I could see their reg - the traffic management for that game was non -existent, they were all outside Thomond Park and nowhere else.

    It's okay - they weren't speeding.

I'm sure I read somewhere that they were going to introduce the 'average speed' system they use on the Continent and in some parts of the UK and NI where they time you're journey from entry to exit to see if you've been speeding and the ticket is automatically issued. In some places in France you see cars pulled in short of the exit to a toll route letting the clock wind down before exiting.
For example if the speed limit is 60kmph and the distance between A and B is 60km, using video and number plate surveillance every car that completes the journey in under 60 mins is fined for speeding.

Surely in that instance it would be easier to just slow down to 60?!?

Yes as it's a fairly short tunnel, I use the DPT a lot and a lot of people seem to find it difficult to do the whole journey at the 80kmph speed limit urging by the number of cars come right up my arse or shoot past me when I'm trying to do it.
