Near Christchurch again, same as 2011.

    7.4 magnitude, whereas the 2011 was 6.3.

But the epicentre of that one was only 11 km away from Christchurch, whereas this one is about 95km away, so it won't have a 7.4 force in Christchurch.

    That's a pretty rural area.

    Hope there are no casualties

It must be so harrowing for residents to build and rebuild every few generations. They appreciate that they are living on dangerous ground and it's only a matter of time.

Ireland is lucky that it has a benign weather and geological position. Natural disasters are uncommon and infrequent.

Along with the magnitude, we should also look at the depth figure: 10 km. This is quite shallow, meaning that the effects will be stronger over a smaller area.
GDACS categorises this one as Orange, with light damage within a 110km radius, (Christchurch is 92km away.)

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

That corner of New Zealand has really woken from it's slumber, the 7th significant quake (6.0+) since 2010 having gone since 1995 with nothing of note

    Because "powerful" earthquakes happen regularly.

Woken up at 5 past midnight by a lot of rolling. First time I've felt the need to react to a quake here in New Plymouth. Very long duration and A LOT of movement, pretty scary stuff.

2 confirmed killed so far unfortunately and the town of Kaikoura has been cut off due to blocked road and rail links.
Lots of damage in Wellington and Christchurch, buckled roads, smashed glass etc.

400 odd aftershocks so far, some 5+

A very visual showcase of the forces involved

It's not. It's not terrible in Wellington but ferry and rail is cancelled (and damaged) and a lot of glass damage in the CBD. CBD is effectively closed as buildings are checked one by one for damage and large risk of glass falling. Roads intact and buses running for most parts. Port areas closed off.

Yeah my hotel is on Featherston Street and everywhere around it is closed, broken glass in the streets etc. Into work this morning in the one office we have that's open. Cracks in the footpath on the way in. I know the damage isn't terrible here but I've certainly never seen anything like it. Glad it wasn't much worse.

Had to laugh at the indo (I think it was) on facebook. The story popped up telling of a couple of deaths and plenty of destruction. The picture they chose to accompany the story was a plant knocked over in a sitting room.

It looks like New Zealand is going through a pretty bad period at the moment in terms of big earthquakes.:(
