Popular Beverages in 1960's Ireland?

Hello all,

My first time in this forum, and I hope you don't mind that it's a question.

Myself and my siblings recently discovered a fabulous letter written by a family member in 1966, to be opened far into the future. It very humourously lists many pop-cultural references for the future reader, and also mentions food items from that era.

We have managed to find out what almost everything mentioned is, but one reference still evades us.

The line is: 'The coffee is Maxwell House. I could do with a Phoenix or a Contrast'.

The mention of the coffee suggests that the following two are also beverages, and we have established that Phoenix was indeed a beer in the 1960's. It's 'Contrast' that has us stumped.

Can anyone help us out? We toyed with the idea that the writer instead meant 'for a contrast', but that doesn't explain the capital C.

Phoenix I remember well and I still have a Phoenix glass here but I never heard on Contrast.

The only Contrast I remember were the chocolates.

I just got sidetracked into watching all the 60's ads, can't say I remember many of them, apart from '1001 cleans a big big carpet for less than half a crown!' but I liked the dress styles!
