Ok I'll be coming back to Ireland from Australia via kuala lumper and Dubai. In my checked bag I'll have up to 6 2nd hand iPhones and iPads as gifts for my family.

My bag will be checked thru from KL to DUB so I'm wondering if customs want to check my bag..what is the stance on numerous electronics in boxes with no receipts...?

    Tia..

All the info you need on the financial aspect of it all is here.

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/customs/leaflets/pn1878a.html

If Customs inspect your bags, it is up to you to prove the value of the goods, is what you say it is. If you can not provide the receipts, price tags (that would be on items if they were new) then Customs can determine it themselves & charge you duty/VAT accordinly, if they deem it applies.

Thank you. Lots of info on the link. Not sure if my limit is €430 in total of for each item.

Has anyone done this and been left with a big customs and vat bill?

The combined limit is €430. I wouldn't be putting that amount of goods in checked luggage, very high chance of being inspected and goods stolen especially if boxed.

Last Christmas I returned from Australia with over €3000 worth of new electronics in my checked bag, and fortunately nothing broke. That included stopping in a few SE Asia airports on the way.

And who's going to steal them? You suggesting Dublin customs are thiefs?

I'd say not in Dublin and not in Australia but along the route the risk would be high. Your travel insurance and airline will not cover good of that value if stolen. With the current risk of fire around electronic devices and terrorism there would be a high risk of the case being opened for inspection.

so with out the threat of thieving baggage handlers, how often do customs pull you over or would I be best and declaring my good?

I'd say less than a 1 in 20 chance of being stopped if you accidentally by mistake went in to the green channel instead of the red channel to declare them and only realised your mistake when you were in your house and had already given the gifts to your family.

Every single airline on the planet, warns passengers about putting valuables in their checked in bags. Just because you personally don't know any one who has had items go astray, doesn't mean it won't happen to you. No disrespect, but you are nuts if you think any baggage handler is going to bothered rewrapping your bag & re writing your signature, if the cling wrap comes off during scanning, or is deliberately removed.
