Leaving a court before case is called

This is question arising from another thread in Politics Cafe, the 'arrogance of politicians' thread.
The question is whether you can leave a courtroom, at lunchtime, leaving your solicitor to plead guilty on your behalf. Minor motoring discretion.

Apparently, and I'm not in a position to dispute this, this in the eyes of a judge would be much more of an insult to the court than if you didn't even turn up on the day at all, but sent your solicitor on your behalf to plead guilty.

So could those who know better than I offer an opinion?
