Installed windows 64 on 32 bit netbook

    Hi all

    My daughter has an Acer netbook about 4 years old, 1 gb of RAM. I've had a lot of problems so re-installed windows 7 64 bit as my 32 bit DVD is broken.

    So is this ok and what adjustments if any should I make to get decent performance it seemed to install ok or should I buy a windows 32 bit DVD and install that.

    So long as the processor actually supports a 64-bit OS then there shouldn't be a problem - it might use slightly more RAM than a 32-bit OS, though. 1GB RAM is pretty short for any modern Windows OS, 32 or 64 bit.

    It will use more RAM than the 32-bit version. Microsoft recommend at least 2GB of RAM for 64-bit due to this but it should still work.

    IIRC the extra memory overhead for 64 bit windows over 32 bit is of the order of a few percent. But I'd still suggest going up to 2gb ram anyway, the only instance of win7 i ever saw running well on 1gb ram was the netbook edition on an eeepc, and even then it still improved when I upgraded it to 2gb.
