Kia Sorrento - petrol into diesel engine.

    I drive a 2006 Kia Sorrento commercial automatic diesel.

    Today I accidentally put 15 litres of unleaded petrol instead of diesel into it. I didn't drive it and I pushed the car and parked it up until I could get it pumped out by a crowd that does this sort of thing.

    Pumping seemed to go fine and I drove home without a glitch. About 5km from the house the jeep just shut down for want of a better description. When this happened the "Immob" wording came on in the dash. I tried starting it numerous times but couldn't get it going. Eventually I got it going somehow and got to working 200 yards of the estate and the same thing happened. Similar pattern occurred and I somehow managed to get it going.

    Has anybody any idea what's going on herr?

    Is it down to the petrol going in?

    Did your man do something wrong with the pumping?

    Any ideas?

    Did you fill it to the brim with diesel after?

    On you average day, when you turn the key one or two clicks but don't start the engine.... do you see the same lights that came on when it cut out?

    No, the person doing the pumping put €20 diesel into it.

    It's never not started on me. Once or twice when I've turned the key to turn the radio on the "Immob" and "Engine" symbol came on but go off as soon as I started the jeep.

    Not condoning it, but some people put a small amount of petrol into diesel cars to clean the engine.

    I once put a similar amount of petrol into a 70l fuel tank and filled up the rest of the way with Diesel and it drove fine.

    Is there a difference between being pumped and drained? It's best to fill up afterwards to dilute as much as possible the petrol in the tank.

    It's an oldish car, but probably too much of a coincidence to break down after mis-fueling and not be related.

    It was driving perfectly and I was delighted.

    Your right, being drained is a better description. He took off the engine cover and contacted the hose there and drained it from that point.

    When he had it drained, he asked me to start the jeep up. Everything went well but he was able to cut the engine while he was under the bonnet. It was like there was something beside where he had his hose connected to, that he used to stop the car. Maybe by doing this he damaged something or put something loose?

    Nah, that just means he knows his way around engines.

    But, not sure the system was fully drained, and I would have thought he should have recommended filling up to the brim to better your chances.

    No, he never recommend filling it up.

    Annoyed now. If he didn't drain it correctly I'll be out to get my money back. Trying to get a mechanic out to have a look at it. Failing that, I'll try to get it too a mechanic. Trying to avoid driving it though as it's cutting out on me while driving. Dangerous.

    I would'nt be getting too excited just yet, probably just left a pipe or the filter loose.

    Sounds like it's getting airlocked.

    Had a mechanic look at it. Says all it was was a bit of residue or airlocked. Everything is grand now. Thanks for the help all.
