I'm half thinking of switching to electric ireland and availing of the nest gizmo. Not sure if it's suitable for my system though. My kerosene burner (external) is about 12 years old. No special valves for zones etc etc. Just a bog standard heating system that heats the rads and supply hot water to taps. Is this nest gizmo compatible?

    Yes.

Would be best to put in a couple of zones whenever funds allow.

Nest started off as a great idea but I have spent the past year fighting with my two thermostats and have ended up switching off all their 'features'. I have ended up with two very expensive 'egg timers' on my walls.

Radiant Heat = sent my bills through the roof!
Hot water off = kept heating the water for 48 hours!
Away = went to Spain for a week, Nest kept heating my empty house!
Phone = won't work unless you leave on Background App Refresh (my other 79 apps work fine without it).

Hugely disappointing company! My advice would be to go with a simpler and cheaper thermostat.

Nest looks too fancy for my 3-zone setup.. small house, no need for thermostats imho
Climote looks good but charge annually to access your controller via their 'cloud' service... no ta

I'm just looking for a simple way to schedule the three zones...
    > downstairs heating for one hour in the morning (incl. HW)
    > both heating zones in the evening but upstairs zone for just an hour and downstairs for intermittent bursts
    > and ability to boost just the HW when needed

remote controlling via web or app is bling in my opinion.. just need solid scheduler with perhaps SMS control when needed

only started googling this but anyone got personal experience?

this unit looks like what I'm looking for and from Cork as well boy! their ember app looks good as well, pity can't SMS into it though... their RF thermostats sound good too if I was bothered... 120 euros for the controller alone
