Tuition fees are funded by the government's Free Fees Initiative for EU students studying their first degree. Students are liable for tuition fees when they repeat a year.

Registration (student contribution fee) is payable by all students (approx 3,000), unless they qualify for a SUSI grant.

For tax relief, the first 3,000€ is not allowed (i.e. The student contribution fee).

Bit off topic, but worth mentioning, I think!

When I started undergrad, there weren't "free fees". Think my family paid about 2600 punts a year.

There was a registration fee then, too. It was about 120 punts.

Now we have supposedly "free fees". But the registration fee is around 3000 euro.

The phrase "free fees me hole" leaps to mind...

    Correct.

    We don't have "free fees".

Fees are typically 5-6k pa for a degree.

The State pays maybe half, students pay 3,000.

Half of students don't pay at all, as they qualify for a fees grant.
