Can I be taught?

I've played bass in various bands over the years and have always wanted to contribute some basic backing vocals.
I've never sang live before, and don't think I can do so very well - I find it hard to sing in tune every time, and even harder to sing and play.

Is this something that can be taught? I'm not looking for anything too fancy, just the ability to sing harmonies and not go out of tune.

Would one to one vocal tuition help here, or would I need to have some basic "skill" to begin with?
