Switching to Saorview

    Hi Guys,

I know this has probably been asked a million times but would appreciate any help/advice.

My Sky is due to end tomorrow, took the decision not to continue with it as I will be away over Christmas for 5/6 weeks so was good timing in relation to the current contract, no point paying for it when away for so long at the start of a new 12 month term.

I have a LG Smart TV and wondering what I need to get the Saorview channels working on it. I am in an apartment block and the current Sky feeds from a shared dish, small hole in the wall to the outside for the cable to come through.

Will I need a separate outside aerial? If so can you make some recommendations as to a good aerial to get? As this will probably only a stop gap for a few months I don't really fancy splashing out too much.

If there is anything else I'll need please point me in the right direction or to a thread that answers the above.

    Cheers,
    kmart.

Yes you will need an aerial, you might depending on your location from the nearest saorview transmitter and the layout of your apartment be able to use an internal aerial. Something like this from Argos might work, has good reviews...

Your TV may be able to record on USB or you could buy a Saorview PVR for €85 which will allow you record two channels at once...

I'm around 12K from the Three Rock mast so might try that internal one out.
Don't think I'll have much need for a recording function when only picking up the Irish channels but thanks for the link.

You should still be able to get the free british channels off satellite, from the sky connection, unless the wire from the shared dish is removed.

if you get a cheapo aerial, you should be able to get some signal from 3rock. If you can get enough to have a picture, you should be able to place the aerial facing 3rock as best you can and you're good to go. Possibly investing in a better aerial if you want to.

If you're north facing you'll have to deal with whatever interference you get through the building, if facing 3 rock, you should be able to get a perfect signal.

Complete and utter waste of money. Amplifiers on indoor aerials are a waste of time, money, and electricity. An amplifier is to overcome the loss on a long run of cable which you don't have on an indoor aerial.

If an indoor aerial will work in your area one from a Euro shop will work.

So the UK FTA channels are working, as are my BT Sport/eir sports channels so happy enough with that.
