Replacing logbook with tax office

I sold my car recently but looks like i misplaced the logbook.

I rang the office in clare and they said to get the rf134 form filled and stamped by the gardai then take it to the tax office to get a duplicate, then go back to the guy who bought the car and get him to sign it.

I was a bit confused because I thought i just filled the form, made the tax office aware of the change of ownership and then sent the form to clare who sent out the logbook, but it doesn't seem to be that way, can anyone please clarify?

As well as that, I contacted the local motor tax office (u4) here in swords and they said there was a fee of 12 euro for the form, and also a 20 euro fee to send it off. This sounded a bit odd to me, are they really charging 20 euro to send a form or can i not just send it myself? The guys out in clare said i had to go through a tax office.

    Any help is appreciated, thanks

I've never heard of the €20 fee to send a form off.

My understanding is that if a replacement log book is needed then the current registered owner fills out the RF134 form that you can download and print off from here:
    https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/pdf/RF134_en.pdf

You then go to your local Garda station, get them to stamp it as a witness and bring it into your local motor tax office with €12. A new log book is then issued about 5 days later.

Once you receive the replacement log book you then get the new owner to fill in the change of ownership details on the back and you the seller, post it off to Shannon. They will then process it, transfer it over to the new owner and issue them a new logbook within a few weeks.

That explains all I need to know, haven't a clue why I was told I had to pay 20 euro to them but anyway, thanks !

There is no MTO in Swords - the only one in Dublin now is in Smithfield. I assume these were a crowd like Q4U - a private company who will do the legwork for you (for a fee). You can deal directly with Smithfield (by post or in person) and avoid what seems like a hefty fee for doing very little.

There used to be a crowd in the pavilions who did this for a fee alright. If the OP googled for a phone number for the tax office it might have come up as their number?

I googled motor tax office near swords and that was the first to come up, they weren't in pavilions though, they're near the apple green up by balheary. I'm gonna go straight to smithfield now though, thank you all for the help

You can print an rf134 off the web. Get it stamped before heading into town.
