What would be a good price to get a timing belt fitted?

How long is a timing belt piece of string?

We'd need a make and model to give any sort of idea.

Between 300 and 500 probably since we don't even know what car this is for.
Ring local mechanics and get quotes.
Ask if that includes water pump.

    About 800 including pump assuming that it's a 2.5 V6 MG ZTT.

If it's the 1.6 in the older Focuses and that, I'd imagine around the 450 mark including everything. The Focuses weren't too bad.

Petrol? Should be simple enough, I think the engines are based on Mitsubishi design. I'd expect the price above again at the very most - but that's in a garage in Tipp. You'd get cheaper off a back yard mech if you wanted, or you could pay much, much more in, say, Dublin.

Good thing I'm missing some :D

I've never been near a diesel Kia, so I can't say accurately what it'd cost, but I know it'd cost more...

I'm a rookie here. So what causes price differences of a few hundred between one belt and another ?

Varying degrees of complexity and hardship. You could do a timing belt and pump on something like an old 1.2 8v Punto in little over an hour as long as you take your chances with speed and everything goes completely perfectly.

Whereas, if you feel like suffering some, you can do a belt on a V6 Audi. You won't do that in an hour. In fact, if you rushed - and nothing went wrong - you'd do well to do it in four or even five :D

Yeah some engines just have more bits or are more difficult to get at where you need to get at.

So when ringing around, I should be able to get a quote simply by mentioning make and model of the car?

How much would it be for a Honda hrv 2001?
I've had some pretty good quotes so far, but not sure when it needs doin as its marked at 82 k on. 2 cars, (roughly) yet one Speedo in miles and one in kilometres? 136,000 miles and 165000 kms respectively. ..

    That a subie boxer engine?

Yeah random pic off the Internet, I sure as sh1t wasn't at one myself! Leave that to the pro's. DOHC obviously, not sure if 2.0 like yours or the 2.5.

Just threw it out there to mess with people's general expectations of what an engine looks like. They must be some of the longest car timIng belts going?

Trying to change the spark plugs in a 2.0 turbo boxer had to be one of the hardest and most infuriating jobs I've ever done on a car. My knuckles were in bits..

Trying to even find the f&*kers compared to normal engines. Spotted them on one side with the airbox out, further down than I thought they'd be. Nah there's another job I left to a pro. With the longlife plugs they're usually welded in there anyway or so I'm told!

I had to remove the air box and a **** load of other bits. Such awkward spots. Usually have iridium plugs in there as it's a job you don't want to do often...

Is there a difference in petrol and Diesel engines regarding the complexity of changing a belt?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

It depends on the design of the engine rather than which fuel type it uses. Not all engines have the timing belt designed the same. Some use a chain while others use a belt, some have it located at the rear of the engine while others have it towards the front.

So the diesel and petrol versions of a model should be same price roughly when it comes to a new belt?

No not always, it depends on the designs of the engines and how hard it is to get into the timing belt.
