Volkswagen oil pump chain

There has been a bit of a knocking noise coming from my '05 Passat the last week or so, brought it to mechanic and he's just said the chain that drives the oil pump is going. He reckons Volkswagen dont sell these chains and that i may have to buy a conversion kit to change it to a gear set up. He did one for an Audi a few years back and cost 2,000.
I suppose im just asking if anyone has any advice or know more about this than me?
Oh and the car is worth 4,000, high spec model all that stuff, so makes no sense to spend 2,000 fixing it. But i believe there are chain kits available to hopefully 😖

    Thanks

2.0 diesel i assume. Its a known issue with them
    Is the knocking bad?
There is a possibility thats its the flywheel at fault.
My best advice is if its not too bad is trade it against something better and hope the salesman doesnt look at the car or do an inspection.
An option here is George Dalton, who is a poster here. He could give you a price/opinion on this.

I think your valuation of the car is a bit high no matter what the spec is.
Its a 11/12 year old car with an engine thats known for oil pump issues.
On done deal 05 2.0diesel passats are going for 2000/2500 with spec,
5k will get you up to 2008/2009 with cheap tax

Sorry i meant i bought it for 4000 last year but its worth 3k now so no sense in spending 2k to fix it. Just dropped it to a didferent mechanic for second opinion and from listening to it he reckons either a pullie gone, fly wheel or fan belt he'll het back to me when he has a look though.
Found oil pump chain kits in UK for €200 too so i dunno why my first mechanic thinks you cant get them for Volkswagen.
And yes its the 2.0 litre 140bhp. I know they've a bad reputation, first time having issues with it though and my friend whos a mechanic himself owned it the previous 3 years and never had anything major to do with it either

There is more to the whole oil pump issues with these engines than replacing a chain. There is a drive the size of a pencil thay gives bother too .
I assume your mechanic is fixing this too.
George is quoting 800 to fix that alone here

Its possible that your first mechanic doesnt want the bother of doing it

This could be the issue, maybe hes just giving the worst possible diagnosis to scare me away.
Second mechanic has just told me theres a pullie gone on the timing belt so i need to replace that and the water pump.
190 for parts and 130 for labor. Sounds better than 2.5k from first mechanic

Could be back to the bad news now the second mechanic went deeper and changed the oil and found metal shavings in it. So i could be screwed after all
