My company offers educational assistance. I used this to pay for my masters. In return you sign a contract of sorts saying you have to pay this back if you leave within 2 years of taking the assistance.

If you were to be made redundant so couldn't see out the 2 years, would you be liable for the money do you think? Or would it be voided?

Your not the one that terminated the contract so I highly doubt you'd be liable to pay anything back. Really need to see the terms of the contract but id be 99% sure you wouldn't pay it back in the event of redundancy

    Thanks. I'm thinking the same.

I read the contract, it mentions nothing of this scenario, more about what happens if I dropped out of the course or left the company.

Are you being made redundant ? I wouldn't think they be looking to you to pony up . It's not of your doing....

I saw this being taken care of in a place I used to work in a few years ago and the clawback was not invoked. Frankly, if the company is paying out redundancy money, the last thing they need to worry about is a few educational grants which they have already paid out for a year or two beforehand...

Yes, it has been officially announced now

simply no, you would be asked to cover it, however i would find it very strange that a company would pay for a course when they know they are going to making you redundant.

unless it is part of the redundancy payment or a retraining or upskilling scheme as part of the redundancy.

Well they paid in June. I don't think the redundancies were on the cards then!

Redundancy doesn't come out of the blue, unless it's a very small company if they paid up already and your being made redundant now your grand. They covered it and knew the risk.

In multi-nationals, redundancy does sometimes come without local managers (with delegations to approve training) being aware of it until very late in the piece.

OP, I suspect that the company will have far bigger issues to worry about, and wouldn't even ask.

But it's possible they will try to make you repay the amount. However if you kick up a fuss and start to get a lawyer involved they will most likely back off as it would cost them more in legal fees than the course amount.

I've seen this before and all educational debts were written off.

    Maybe.
However they were still on-boarding perm staff up until 2 weeks ago. I think it was quite a surprise. Ruthless US multi-national!!
Imagine resigning a job to come in to another to be told your job was gone in 6 months, I'd be raging.

Yes, I think they will be distracted with it all and won't be worrying about their few thousand euro.
