Brake pads on a budget in Dublin

    Hi there,

My car needs brake pads. I'm a bit strapped at the moment so I can't afford to get them straight away. If anyone has a ball park figure of how much I'd be looking to pay for them, that would be great and if you know of a city centre mechanic who'd do them for cheap that'd be even better!

    Thanks!

How do you know this? Have you checked or have you been told e.g. Nct tester?
Maybe you know a little about it and could do it yourself?

either way don't scrimp on the one thing that could save you and your car. Get the job done right!

Moved from DIY to main forum as OP asked for recommended places.

OP, any local garage can do this for you. Ring many local places and get quotes, go with whoever you think is best.
No garage will fit pads that will kill you. Worst case scenario it will fit pads that wear faster than better pads.

    Cost maybe 100-150

Best get the pads as soon as you can, if you leave it until they are down to the metal they will damage the brake discs which will be a much more expensive job. I'd say somewhere between €70-€100 including parts would be a fair enough price per axle, the car may only need front or back.

Buy the pads and fit them yourself, it's very easy to do if you have the tools.

Easy IFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF you're mechanically minded. That's why I asked OP if they were handy....

Aye, it's not hard but maybe not the best thing to do unless you have DIYd on the car before (and have jacks etc).

My experience of cheap pads and discs is they cost you more in the long run op.Try and get a decent brand.

Easy to do once the slider/caliper bolts loosen off easily...

Every other older car I look at these days has knackered or rounded heads somewhere

You can order pads online from the likes of Micks Garage, should give you a few brands when you put the reg in, here's a video guide on the basics...

Ahem, with respect the OP is on a budget and ordering online may not always give you the best price....

The "etc." should definitely include axle stands! Don't work under a vehicle with a jack only!

Indeed, if OP wants to go DIY then a thread in DIY forum will tell her/him exactly what he needs to have and do.

are pads a visual inspection, if car fails on just that? op, I can pm you a mechanics details, who does this work for very cheap, based in D12. If you want the details, just let me know...

I think once the car passes the brake test there's no visual test for wear of the pads or discs.
