Car charge issue

    Hi I have a vehicle that won't hold charge, just fitted new battery it was OK starting/stopping for a week, had alternator tested and that checked out OK, car will crank over now but hasn't enough power to start, with jump leads connected car will start and stop again perfectly for the day but drain slowly over night again, has anybody any ideas or checks that could help me with my problem ???

    What car and year is it?
    Sounds like alternator still. Did a mechanic check it out?
    Why did you change battery in the first place?

    Any chance something is draining the battery like a light permanently on in glovebox or boot?

    car is 1987 Toyota Levin, changed battery as car wouldn't shut of when I turned of the key and took it out and a new battery stopped this but car has began to turn over very slowly not starting but with jump leads will and will run OK for the day but overnight drain a bit again, yes mechanic checked alternator and it is ok

    How do you mean the car wouldn't shut off, like a turbo timer type thing or precombustuon? Is there evidence of an aftermarket alarm having been fitted? Or any other electrical adds?? This is where the fault could be.

    No turbo timer no aftermarket alarm, car literally stayed running when key was removed from ignition, new battery installed solved this problem to a certain extent now I have the current issue of it draining slowly and not having enough power to crank over quick enough, cranks very slowly, engine was converted to the newer toyot Levin 20v engine with different wiring loom and ecu upgrade, it also idles slightly off as if its floating idle but drives OK, really stumped as its not the sort of car I would normally work on, and the aftermarket wiring and and ecu is wrapped up and hiding nicely rooted back into my glove compartment

    Sounds like you have a parasitic current drain. You will need an ammeter. Remove the battery negative terminal and connect the ammeter in series with the negative lead and the negative post of the battery. Ensure ignition is switched off and car doors closed and courtesy lights off. Take a current measurement. Anything higher than say 500 mA would indicate a current draw enough to drain a battery overnight. Now locate your accessories fuse box and one by one remove and replace the fuses until the current reading drops. That fuse you pulled will be the circuit you need to investigate. If you have aftermarkey ICE check those fused circuits first.
