    Hi everyone,

Never signed up for the dole before in my life. I am 28 and currently unemployed and see the dole as the only option for the moment as income as I don't want to be asking my parents for money. I applied for the dole about two weeks ago and received my card in the post last week but I wonder will it take long to get a letter to tell me that I'm entitled to receive the dole? Any help would be great.

It's very hard to tell how long you will wait or even if you will qualify

Thanks for getting back to me, well I was working for place until they left me go, so I said I would sign up to the dole, filled up the form, brought in what they asked for and received the public services card in the post last week...surely that is a good sign that I will be getting it?

The public services card doesn't mean anything everyone is due to get one working or unemployed.

    Mmmm...mightn't mean anything at all.
If I were you I'd call in person to enquire as to the status of your application

There are two sorts of dole: one is based on the "stamps" you've paid, one is means tested. Hence the question about the PRSI.

This is pretty comprehensive and gives you a good guideline of how claiming works.

Thanks for everyone for your help and advice. Went into the welfare office today and was told that I got approved recently and should have a letter in the post about my payment. Hope I get that letter tomorrow or end of next week.
